SAIL is the new GAIL? Sanjiv Bhasin’s 3 dark horse picks in metal pack
Sanjiv Bhasin, Director, IIFL Securities, says they remain extremely bullish on this space. There will be upgrades, downgrades at new highs. Who thought Tata Steel will go to Rs 165 from Rs 100 in the last six months and right now, SAIL is the new GAIL. So, one can imagine the left-out feeling. Bhasin says: “We continue to be very optimistic. Our dark horse play there continues to be Nalco, JSW and Vedanta.” Over the last week, the metal pack had a very solid run. But today, CLSA has downgraded JSW Steel as well as Tata Steel. Do you think they are a bit too conservative and early in downgrading or do you think the rally has played out? Sanjiv Bhasin: Since a couple of weeks ago, I have been saying that the dollar is headed lower and if China comes back, we will see metals do well. We have seen that there has been no capacity addition. And I think the way nickel, copper, all both ferrous and non-ferrous are performing, this could be a very sweet time for metals, particularly commodities, particularly metals. And we remain extremely bullish on this space.

India's microchip leap: The tough part lies ahead
₹1.5 trillion providing the building blocks for the critical semiconductor value chain of design, fabrication, assembly, testing, marking and packaging. Key among these proposals is the partnership between Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation for a ₹91,000-crore fabrication plant with a capacity of 50,000 wafer starts per month. This chip capacity will grant traction at last to India’s long-standing quest for self-sufficiency in semiconductors, or near freedom from reliance on overseas suppliers.

Pakistan protests India's seizure of ship on suspicion of 'consignment for nuclear programme', calls it ‘unjustified’
Pakistan on Sunday protested India's action on a Karachi-bound ship from China on suspicion of 'consignment for nuclear programme'. Calling the action an "unjustified seizure" of commercial goods destined for Karachi, Pakistan clarified that the consignment was a "simple case" of the import of a commercial lathe machine by a commercial entity which supplies parts to the automobile industry in this country.

What a scorcher: Can India sustain this torrid pace of growth?
Mint looks deeper into the third quarter performance and the prospects for the next few quarters. After strong growth in the first two quarters of 2023-24 (8.2% in Q1 and 8.1% in Q2), it was expected that the economic expansion will moderate to 6.5% levels in the third quarter. This was because manufacturing, mining and electricity sectors were showing signs of weakness, and an uneven monsoon was hurting agricultural output.

Viksit Bharat: The need for devising robust policies to harness potential of India’s evolving demography
In her interim budget last month, Nirmala Sitharaman proposed establishing a panel to deliberate on challenges arising from population growth and demographic changes so that India can attain developed country status by 2047. To this effect, it becomes critical to decipher the intricacies of these challenges and delineate a clear path forward. What precisely are these challenges, and how can they be effectively confronted to pave the way for a prosperous and inclusive future? I present six challenges that hold the key to unlocking India's true potential. 'Fast population growth,' while historically significant, is not the paramount challenge we confront today. Surpassing China as the world's most populous country last year marked a watershed moment. But recent data heralds a major shift: India stands on the brink of achieving a total fertility rate of 2.1, a threshold revered as 'replacement level fertility' by demographers. While this milestone doesn't signify an immediate halt to population growth, it signals a pivotal juncture in our demographic evolution.

Pakistan says seizure of commercial goods by India 'unjustified'
Pakistan on Sunday protested India's «unjustified seizure» of commercial goods destined for Karachi, saying the consignment was a «simple case» of import of a commercial lathe machine by a commercial entity which supplies parts to the automobile industry in this country. The comments by the Foreign Office came after security agencies at Mumbai's Nhava Sheva port intercepted and seized the consignment of a Karachi-bound ship from China after it was found carrying a dual-use consignment with implications for Pakistan's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. Customs officials, acting on intelligence, halted the Malta-flagged merchant ship — CMA CGM Attila — en route to Karachi on January 23 and, during its inspection, found that the consignment had a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine, manufactured by an Italian company, known for its precision and efficiency controlled by a computer system.

Jaishankar cautions against threats created by AI & deepfakes
AI) and Deepfakes, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that these pose a threat to India’s national security. “When we think of security, it is not just the defence of the borders, it is not countering terrorism alone…. But there is the daily routine which is so susceptible today to manipulation and this is growing,” Jaishankar said during a discussion about his latest book organised by India’s leading public policy body Ananta Aspen Centre here on Saturday evening. “Today foreign interference in this country is growing. It is important for the average person to understand how the world is changing because it is an era of AI and deepfakes,” he said.
