Time to think about one plus India. EMS can continue to be a big bet: Vikas Pershad
Vikas Pershad, Fund Manager, M&G Investments, says “one has to think about not just China plus one, but also one plus India. If you are selling into a country, add India; if you are making in another country, you have to think about India now, which I have come around to, I was not a believer in a big way just a couple of years ago.” Markets always follow a style. There is a time when dividend investing will do well. There is a time when growth does well. There is a time when value does well. In the last 18 months, growth has done well in India whether it is some of the defence, cyclicals or infrastructure names and value has made a comeback which is PSU. It is a rarity. Why is that we are seeing a rising tide phenomenon? Vikas Pershad: Before we look abroad, you look internally and look at the retail interest, how the financialisation of savings is happening here in India. Retail investors are now taking money from other sources and putting it into the market and I think that is driving it. You have a lot of people focussed on this market. You have China, on one hand, that has gone from being a specialist market to a generalist market and it is back to being now a specialist market.

China seen cutting mortgage reference rate for first time since June
China is widely expected to trim its benchmark mortgage reference rate at a monthly fixing on Tuesday, as banks' improving net interest margins give authorities some leeway to use monetary stimulus to shore up faltering economy growth. The loan prime rate (LPR) normally charged to banks' best clients is calculated each month after 20 designated commercial banks submit proposed rates to the People's Bank of China (PBOC).

The Ebitda margin of JSW Steel contracted nearly 57 basis points sequentially during the December quarter to 17.1% as per Mint’s analysis.

Foreign direct investment into China slumps to worst in 30 years
Foreign businesses’ direct investment into China last year increased by the lowest amount since the early 1990s, underscoring challenges for the nation as Beijing seeks more overseas investment to help its economy. China’s direct investment liabilities in its balance of payments rose by $33 billion last year, 82% down on 2022, according to data from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange released Sunday. That measure of new foreign investment into the country — which records monetary flows connected to foreign-owned entities in China — slumped to the lowest level since 1993.

US fears Russia might put a nuclear weapon in space
Russia conducted a series of secret military satellite launches around the time of its invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, U.S. intelligence officials began delving into the mystery of what, exactly, the Russians were doing. Later, spy agencies discovered Russia was working on a new kind of space-based weapon that could threaten the thousands of satellites that keep the world connected. In recent weeks, a new warning has circulated from U.S. spy agencies: Another launch may be in the works, and the question is whether Russia plans to use it to put a real nuclear weapon into space — a violation of a half-century-old treaty. The agencies are divided on the likelihood that President Vladimir Putin would go so far, but nonetheless the intelligence is an urgent concern to the Biden administration.
