Indian Navy has a Rs 2 lakh crore plan to counter Chinese dragon in Indian Ocean
Indian Navy has placed orders for 68 warships and vessels valued at approximately Rs 2 lakh crore. As per a TOI report, this strategic move aligns with India's overarching goal of safeguarding its extensive geostrategic interests and countering China's expanding presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Indian Navy, currently boasting 132 warships, 143 aircraft, and 130 helicopters, has received preliminary approval, known as 'acceptance of necessity' (AoN), for the construction of eight next-generation corvettes, nine submarines, five survey vessels, and two multi-purpose vessels within India in the forthcoming years. Despite grappling with the slow-paced construction in domestic shipyards, the phased decommissioning of aging vessels, and fiscal constraints, the Navy anticipates achieving a force level of approximately 155-160 warships by 2030. However, the figures remain dynamic.

Oppn decides to raise people's issues in Parliament's special session
special session of Parliament and decided to participate in the discussions and raise people's issues, sources said. The leaders during the meeting of INDIA alliance in the morning decided to continue with the floor coordination among the parties during the five-day session and corner the government on issues of price rise, unemployment, Manipur violence and Chinese transgressions on the border. They also decided to press the government to allow discussions on issues related to Adani firms, farmers distress, economic situation in the country, and the caste census. Sources said the alliance decided to oppose the CEC and other ECs appointment bill which has already been introduced in the Rajya Sabha. Leaders of the Congress, TMC, RJD, NCP, left parties, JMM, Samajwadi Party, DM and VCK were among those who attended the meeting at the office of leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge at around 10 AM. Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the absence of agenda for the special Parliament session, and proposing a list of issues she wanted a discussion on. Gandhi listed nine issues for discussion in her letter which included price rise and violence in Manipur, Centre-state relations, rise in cases of communal tension, border transgressions by China, and the demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) to investigate the transactions of the Adani business group in light of several revelations. «I must point out that this special session has been convened without any consultation with other political parties.

Are heatwaves evidence that climate change is speeding up?
run of very hot days should happen in July is, by itself, perhaps unsurprising. Two-thirds of the Earth’s land is in the northern hemisphere, and land warms up faster than water does, so northern summers are the hottest times of year for the planet as a whole. But the highest temperatures tend to come later in the season.

Asian Games: One last hurrah for many Indian athletes
Rohan Bopanna, hockey great P R Sreejesh and TT legend Sharath Kamal, are gearing up for one last hurrah at the Asian Games. Both Sharath and Rohan are still pulling off world class performances in their 40s while 35-year-old Sreejesh remains the proverbial wall of the Indian hockey team. The other big names who are expected to say goodbye to the continental event include wrestling veteran Bajrang Punia, squash star Dipika Pallikal, tennis player Ankita Raina and discus thrower Seema Punia. All of them might be in the twilight of their careers but remain medal contenders at the Games.

What the Asia-Pacific needs to leap forward on climate action
climate action, the Asia-Pacific needs to start delivering on ambitious emissions targets. The Asia-Pacific's greenhouse gas emissions keep rising and in some respects the region is going backwards. Climate action was the only Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 13) in which outcomes went backwards in the Asia-Pacific between 2015 and 2023. Progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 13, taking «urgent action to address climate change», has been a case of two steps forward, one step back in the Asia-Pacific. Over the past two years, countries in the Asia-Pacific have made strides: China and Indonesia have undertaken to transition their economies to net zero by 2060, Australia and most Southeast Asian countries by 2050. China has massively invested in renewable energy.

Thailand eyes India to boost tourism recovery after waiving visa for China
Srettha said he would make a trip to India this year with plans to meet his counterpart Narendra Modi and discuss increasing flight frequency between the two countries, including more services by flag carrier Thai Airways International Pcl. “There aren’t that many incoming flights from India yet due to internal politics,” Srettha said in an interview during a media forum on Monday. “I hope to visit before the end of the year to negotiate on the issue.”Thailand may also mull other measures to boost Indian tourist arrivals, such as offering tax exemptions on jewelry imported for Indian weddings held in Thailand, a popular destination for such ceremonies, he said. As Indian tourists already can easily obtain Thai visas, a visa waiver may not be necessary, he said. Srettha’s comment came a week after his cabinet approved temporary visa exemptions for Chinese and Kazakh tourists ahead of the high season. Tourists from the two countries can enter Thailand without a visa between Sept. 25 and Feb. 29, and can stay for a maximum of 30 days at a time.

WTO
Warning
week
Week that started with WTO warning ended with trade battle
World Trade Organization in Geneva early this week was unambiguous: A global economy split into rival trading factions would reduce real incomes 5% — maybe double that amount in poor countries. The next day, the European Union launched what some of the 27-nation bloc’s most well-known industries — ranging from Airbus SE to cosmetic producers and wine makers — worry could land them on the punishing end of a trade war with China. Since the European Commission’s announcement Wednesday of a new anti-subsidy inquiry into Chinese electric vehicles, which might lead to duties on Made-in-China EV imports, European businesses are scrambling to assess their exposure to a potential tariff barrage between two of the world’s largest economies. That’s because President Xi Jinping’s government has shown a determination to respond to punitive trade measures — like former US President Donald Trump’s tariffs — with its own reciprocal restrictions. The most powerful tool Beijing can wield is restricting access to its huge domestic market. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, speaking to Bloomberg Television on Friday, signaled that perhaps a new era has arrived, one where “the EU starts thinking about its own interest.”‘Powerful Signal’ With the Chinese subsidy investigation, Brussels “wanted to send a powerful signal,” former EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told Bloomberg News in an interview.
