Charting the global economy: India’s inflation changed little in Feb, US takes a closer look at China shipbuilding subsidies
Federal Reserve in no rush to start lowering interest rates. Industrial production figures illustrated a euro area economy that’s merely limping along. In Japan, speculation intensified for the first rate hike in more than a decade after the country’s largest labor union secured big wage deals. The world of geopolitics continued to evolve, including Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, declining foreign investment in China and US concerns about Beijing’s subsidies for shipbuilders.

Chinese satellites heading to moon fail to reach orbit after rocket falters
Chinese satellites failed to reach a planned orbit on their way to the moon after experiencing abnormalities, a rare setback for Beijing's high-profile space programme. The satellites, known as DRO-A and DRO-B, were launched on Wednesday evening from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the Sichuan Province, the launch centre said in a press release on Thursday. They were carried by A Yuanzheng-1S (Expedition-1S) upper-stage aircraft, attached to a Long March-2C carrier rocket, it said.

China tightens scrutiny over IPOs, listed firms to revive stock market
China published a set of rules on Friday that would tighten scrutiny over stock listings, public companies and underwriters, as regulators ramp up efforts to revive investor confidence. Regulators will vet initial public offerings (IPOs) more closely, crack down hard on securities fraud, and encourage listed firms to increase dividend payouts and buy back shares.

The Agni-5 trial has strengthened India’s strategic deterrence
India’s Agni-5 test of a multiple-warhead ballistic missile places the country in a league of powers with only the US, UK, Russia, China and France as other members. Importantly, its success steps up India’s deterrence at a time China has openly begun to pursue a policy of power projection beyond its borders. Though not strictly an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) of the order possessed by the Big Five that can hit targets as far as 15,000km, its 5,000km-plus range brings the farthest parts of China and even some of Europe within our strike radius.

Success in solar energy may be a curse for Chinese panel manufacturers
Ever since photovoltaic cells started popping up on pocket calculators and building roofs a few decades ago, solar power has faced a key drawback: It’s a nice technology, but there’s simply not enough of it to make a difference. Right now, it’s facing the opposite difficulty. A tidal wave of investment in solar-power panels has swelled to the point that it threatens to overwhelm the global industry.
