664 crimes against women per million: NCRB data
crime against women were registered across India in 2022, almost 51 FIRs every hour, up from 4,28,278 in 2021 and 3,71,503 in 2020, according to the 2022 NCRB data. The rate of crime against women per lakh population stood at 66.4 while the charge sheeting in such cases was logged at 75.8, showed data from the annual crime report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which functions under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The majority of crimes against women under the Indian Penal Code were of cruelty by their husband or his relatives (31.4%), followed by kidnapping and abduction of women (19.2%), assault on women with the intent to outrage her modesty (18.7%), and rape (7.1%), the NCRB stated. With 14,247 cases in 2022, Delhi registered the highest rate of crime against women in the country at 144.4 — way above the country's average rate of 66.4.

Excise PMLA case: Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court extends AAP leader Sanjay Singh's judicial custody till December 11
Sanjay Singh in a money laundering case related to the excise policy case until December 11, 2023. Meanwhile, the court also ordered to supply an advance copy of the supplementary chargesheet to Sanjay Singh's lawyer and noted that the bail arguments are to be held on December 6, 2023. Earlier during the arguments, the Enforcement Directorate filed an application stating that the names of one protected witness had been mentioned by mistake and hence the same shall not come into the public domain due to their protection. The court has reserved the order for the interim court and directed the court staff to keep the file in secrecy. However, the court, while ordering to serve the advance copy to Sanjay Singh's lawyer, allowed ED to remove or hide such a portion mentioning the protected witness name.

Crime against women: 4.45 lakh FIRs filed in 2022, almost 51 every hour. Delhi tops the list

The national capital recorded 14,247 cases in 2022 with a rate of 144.4 (per lakh), which was way above the national average of 66.4. The crime against women in the national capital stood at 14,277 in 2021 and 10,093 in 2020, reported PTI.

Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan report highest urban unemployment in July-September
Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the National Sample Survey Office, Himachal Pradesh topped the urban unemployment chart with 33.9%, followed by Rajasthan with 30.20% among the age group of 15 to 29 years during July-September 2023, against the national average of 17.3% of the same age group during the period, reported PTI. The PLFS data also revealed that the urban female unemployment rate in Himachal Pradesh was 49.2% among the 15-29 age group in the July-September quarter of this fiscal year as compared to 25.3% of males in the state. Rajasthan registered 39.4% of urban female unemployment in the quarter as against 27.2% in males, the PLFS data revealed.

Govt mulls substantially expanding NCLAT strength to speed up insolvency, M&A appeals
NCLAT) to 20 (including the chairman) from the currently-sanctioned 12, a person aware of details told ET. The idea is to expedite the disposal of appeals against adjudicating authorities in cases ranging from insolvency, mergers and acquisitions to antitrust matters at a time when the economy is expanding at a fast pace, highlighting the indispensability of a much robust dispute resolution system, he said. The proposal comes on top of another plan to bolster the number of members at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to 163 (including its president) from the sanctioned 63, aimed at faster clearances of such cases, he added. “A final decision on these proposals will be taken by the Cabinet. A Cabinet note for this purpose has been floated by the ministry of corporate affairs (MCA),” said the person quoted above. At present, apart from chairman Ashok Bhushan, the NCLAT has two judicial members and six technical ones, according to its website.

CBIC launches two-factor authentication for all e-way bill, e-invoice
Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has enabled two-factor authentication for all e-waybill and e-invoice systems to further enhance the security of the goods and services tax systems. The feature was enabled on December 1 and was rolled out on Monday. Currently the pilot rollout has been done for a state of Haryana and after seamless operation of the same in the state, it is being rolled out for Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Delhi taxpayers in the first phase.
