Jet Airways owes an undisputed sum of Rs 15,400 crore to creditors out of which Rs 1,254 crore is owed to employees
Jet Airways promoter Naresh Goyal diverted Rs 9.46 crores out of a loan granted by Canara Bank to the airline to his wife, son and daughter, from 2011-12 till 2018-19, a remand application filed by the Enforcement Directorate said. Another Rs 1,152 crore was siphoned off as consultancy expense during those five years and salary expense of Goyal’s residential staff at Delhi and Mumbai was being borne by Jet Airways. ED also said that Goyal diverted Rs 2,547 crore showing a payment to its subsidiary JetLite and then wrote off the amount. The central agency on Friday night arrested Goyal and today produced him before a PMLA court in Mumbai. Amit Agarwal, then Chief Financial Officer of the company told ED during interrogations that these payments were directly approved by Goyal himself. “On being asked by the CFO, Naresh Goyal authoritatively replied that these payments were critical for the functioning of the company and there was no point in asking further questions,” the ED said. “As per the CFO, the finance department had no say about these payments and it was directly approved by Goyal through his secretary,” the agency added. A consortium led by State Bank of India of which Canara Bank is part owes Rs 6,000 crore to the airline which has now been marked as Non-Performing Asset (NPA) after the airline shut business in 2019. Lenders will lose 95% haircut on the recovery of the amount if a consortium manages to restart the airline.

Uddhav demands reservation for Marathas, OBCs during special session of Parliament
Parliament convened later this month, a day after violence erupted in Maharashtra's Jalna over the Maratha quota demand. Addressing Shiv Sena (UBT) workers here, Thackeray slammed the «government brutality» of police baton charging the protestors seeking reservation for Marathas in Jalna on Friday evening. «How can police behave in a way without the directions from someone?» he asked. Thackeray said he would visit Jalna later in the evening to meet the protestors. On Friday, police baton charged and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse protesters in Antarwali Sarathi on Dhule-Solapur road in Jalna's Ambad tehsil after they allegedly refused to let authorities shift a man on hunger strike for Maratha quota to hospital. Referring to the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act 2023, Thackeray said when the Supreme Court gave a ruling against the Centre, it passed a law in Parliament. «I had condemned the government's decision to convene a special session (of Parliament). But I welcome it, but first give reservation to Marathas, Dhangars (shepherd community) and OBCs in this special session,» the former chief minister said. He hit out at Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, saying no one from the government had time to meet the agitators in Jalna. Thackeray termed the Centre as «anti-Hindu» as it has convened the special sitting of Parliament from September 18 to 22 during the Ganesh festival. Without taking names, he said those who don't believe in the family system should not talk about the families of others. «Family system is the Hindu tradition.

Opposition bloc INDIA must give proper agenda to country: Shiv Sena (UBT)
INDIA alliance meeting culminated in Mumbai, the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Saturday said the fabric stitched by its constituents will be futile if the opposition bloc does not give a proper agenda to the country. In an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said the issue of seat-sharing should be resolved peacefully in every state. The INDIA grouping on Friday vowed to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls together «as far as possible», asserting seat-sharing arrangements in states will be concluded at the earliest in a «collaborative spirit of give-and-take». As many as 63 representatives from 28 political parties took part in the third meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) alliance at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Mumbai. The editorial said that the Left and the ruling Trinamool Congress have differences in West Bengal, but the two parties took part in the INDIA alliance meeting. The same is the case in Kerala where the Congress and CPI(M) are arch-rivals. The Aam Aadmi Party has shown its willingness to hold discussions with the Congress in Punjab and Delhi, while there are no major differences in Maharashtra in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), it said.

ED arrests Jet founder Naresh Goyal in alleged money laundering case
Jet Airways, Naresh Goyal, in an alleged money laundering case after having questioned him in Mumbai through the day. Goyal will be produced before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court on Saturday. In July, the agency had registered a fresh money laundering case against Goyal, his wife Anita and others based on the first information report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly defrauding the state-owned Canara Bank of ₹538.62 crore. After the enforcement case information report (ECIR), the ED also conducted searches in Mumbai and Delhi including at premises of those linked to the Goyals and the erstwhile auditor of the airline. Earlier in February, the division bench of Justice Revati Mohite-Dere and Prithviraj Chavan of the Bombay High Court had quashed the ED's money laundering case against the couple. The Bench had, however, observed that if any fresh case is registered against the couple by any law enforcement agency, the ED could probe them. According to sources, the fresh money laundering case is based on the recent FIR filed by the CBI against Goyal in which Canara Bank is the complainant.
