Ominous China make golden start on first day of Asian Games
China swept the first gold medals at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday in a statement of intent on day one of the region's answer to the Olympics. China claimed the first gold when Zou Jiaqi and Qiu Xiuping dominated the women's lightweight double sculls rowing to kick off a medal rush for the home nation. The Chinese pair finished in 7min 6.78sec, with Uzbekistan's Luizakhon Islamova and Malika Tagmativa taking silver — almost 10 seconds behind. «I am very excited as it's my first Asian Games,» said Zou, clutching her gold medal. «Stepping on to the podium today is a new starting point to help us prepare for next year's Paris Olympics,» said Qiu. Indonesia's Chelsea Corputty and Rahma Mutiara Putri won bronze. The hosts soon doubled up on the rowing lake as the men's lightweight double sculls gold was won by Fan Junjie and Sun Man, who finished five seconds clear of India's Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh. China won six of the seven golds at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre rowing venue on Sunday morning with only Hong Kong's Lam San-tung and Wong Wai-chun getting in on the party by winning the men's pairs. China's shooters also claimed the women's 10m team air rifle. The hosts' rip-roaring start to the 19th Asian Games, which end on October 8, continued as Sun Peiyuan won the first martial arts gold. Sun successfully defended his men's changquan wushu title from 2018, ahead of Indonesia's Edgar Xavier Marvelo with Macau's Song Chi-kuan third. «I'm so very excited, I'm lost for words,» said Sun. China won 10 of the first 11 golds in the early action on Sunday.King Qin makes splashSwimming is one of the highlights of the Games and will see seven finals later on Sunday at the Hangzhou Olympic Centre Aquatic Sports Arena,

Organising Committee of the Hangzhou Asian Games and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) have taken up the matter with the Chinese government over the denial of entry into the country for three Indian wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh, who have qualified for the Asiad. The three female Wushu players — Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega and Mepung Lamgu — were scheduled to fly out to China on Wednesday night from IGI Airport in Delhi. But have not been able to reach China till Friday, a day before the Opening Ceremony and two days before the start of the Wushu competitions. There are conflicting reports here in Hangzhou with some officials claiming that two of the three Wushu players have received e-accreditation (which for the Asian Games also serves as a visa) but could not download and validate it, while the third player did not get the accreditation.

Asian Games: One last hurrah for many Indian athletes
Rohan Bopanna, hockey great P R Sreejesh and TT legend Sharath Kamal, are gearing up for one last hurrah at the Asian Games. Both Sharath and Rohan are still pulling off world class performances in their 40s while 35-year-old Sreejesh remains the proverbial wall of the Indian hockey team. The other big names who are expected to say goodbye to the continental event include wrestling veteran Bajrang Punia, squash star Dipika Pallikal, tennis player Ankita Raina and discus thrower Seema Punia. All of them might be in the twilight of their careers but remain medal contenders at the Games.

North Korea set to end years-long sporting isolation at Asian Games
North Korea has 191 athletes signed up for the Asian Games starting next week, according to organisers, suggesting the country is poised to end its more than three-year isolation from the global sporting arena. North Koreans are listed on the Games' website for accredited media to compete in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in sports including athletics, gymnastics, basketball, football, boxing and weightlifting. North Koreans were similarly down to compete at a weightlifting tournament in Cuba in June, but they failed to show. North Korea closed its already tight borders in early 2020 following the outbreak of the pandemic and skipped the Tokyo Olympics, which were pushed back to 2021 because of Covid. It was then banned by the International Olympic Committee from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics for failing to take part in Tokyo. There have been recent signs that the border restrictions have been eased slightly, with a taekwondo team allowed to travel to a competition last month in Kazakhstan. Prior to that, North Korea had not sent any of its domestic athletes to overseas competitions since the pandemic. The sporting action at the Games in Hangzhou starts on September 19, four days before the opening ceremony, with North Korea scheduled to face Taiwan in men's football that day. Leader Kim Jong Un is said to be an avid sports fan and Games hosts China are North Korea's longtime ally and main economic benefactor. North Korea has traditionally been especially strong in weightlifting, dominating the event at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018 with eight golds. Ri Song Gum and Rim Un Sim, who both won gold in the women's weightlifting five years ago, are scheduled to appear in Hangzhou. But North Korea has also been among the

Sun bears in Chinese zoo are humans? Here's what authorities have said
sun bears might be humans dressed in bear costumes, after a video of a bear standing on its hind legs sparked speculation online. The zookeepers released a statement from the perspective of Angela, a Malaysian sun bear, emphasizing that not all bears are large and menacing, and that sun bears are actually petite, being the smallest bear species in the world, according to reports. The video led to suggestions that the bear might be a person in a bear costume due to its slender legs and fur folds resembling a human. However, the zoo spokesperson refuted these claims, asserting that the bear in the video is real and that there is no deception happening at the state-run facility. He pointed out that a human wearing a bear suit in the scorching 40°C (104°F) summer temperature would not be able to last more than a few minutes before collapsing. To dispel further doubts, the zoo is arranging visits for reporters to witness the bears firsthand. Sun bears are relatively small, comparable in size to large dogs, standing at a maximum of 1.3 meters (50 inches) tall on their hind legs, unlike larger bear species such as grizzlies, which can reach up to 2.8 meters in height.
