US SEC sues NovaTech over alleged $650 million global crypto fraud
NovaTech and its married co-founders, saying they fraudulently raised over $650 million from more than 200,000 investors worldwide, including many Haitian-Americans. NovaTech and co-founders Cynthia and Eddy Petion allegedly promised investors their money would be safe, with Cynthia Petion assuring they would be «in profit from day one.» The SEC said the Petions instead used new money mainly to repay earlier investors and pay commissions to promoters, while siphoning millions of dollars for themselves. It said the scheme lasted for four years until NovaTech's May 2023 collapse.

Diane Francis: Lavish condo purchased for consul general in New York epitomizes Trudeau's profligacy
Last week was a busy one for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Leaks undermining his finance minister surfaced, as did reports that he was courting former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney. But the biggest splash was in the New York Post, which reported that Canada quietly spent US$6.63 million (C$9 million) to buy a lavish condo overlooking Central Park on Billionaires’ Row in Manhattan, which we later learned is meant to house our consul general, former broadcaster Tom Clark.

Elon Musk suggests late Twitter disclosure was a mistake, seeks to end lawsuit
Elon Musk wants to dismiss a lawsuit by former Twitter shareholders who said he waited too long in early 2022 to reveal his large ownership stake in the social media company, saying «all indications» show his delay was a mistake. In a late Wednesday night filing in Manhattan federal court, Musk called it implausible to believe he wanted to defraud shareholders who didn't know he had taken a 9.2% Twitter stake, and missed out on big gains because they sold their own stock.

Can Joe Biden serve another term? News anchor who interviewed him says “I don’t think so”
George Stephanopoulos was embarrassed after a video went viral in which he could be seen saying that US President Joe Biden is not fit to serve a second term in office. The news anchor had a few days back conducted an interview with the president which had been well received and became a discussion point among many. He immediately regretted his frank exchange of views with a stranger after the video went viral. The news channel too has distanced itself from these comments. Further, Biden’s interview covered a wide range of topics including his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate as well as demands by various Democrats to replace him on the ballot box.

Hunter Biden has sued Fox News accusing the American news outlet of unlawfully publishing explicit images of him as part of a series. President Joe Biden's son has filed the lawsuit in state court in Manhattan. The bone of contention here is the images that were used in «The Trial of Hunter Biden». Judge delays Donald Trump's hush money sentencing to September 18
New York judge on Tuesday delayed Donald Trump's sentencing for his conviction on criminal charges stemming from hush money paid to a porn star until Sept. 18, after the former U.S. president asked for a chance to argue he should have been immune from prosecution. The sentencing had previously been set for July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee on July 15. Trump is expected to be his party's nominee to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election. Trump faces an uphill battle getting the hush money conviction overturned, since much of the conduct at issue in the case predated his time in office. Trump's lawyers on Monday asked Justice Juan Merchan to allow them to argue his conviction in New York state court in Manhattan should be overturned due to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on July 1 that presidents are entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts. Prosecutors with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office said Trump's argument was «without merit,» but agreed to delay the sentencing to give Trump the chance to make his case. A Manhattan jury on May 30 found him guilty of falsifying business records to cover up his former lawyer Michael Cohen's $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about an alleged 2006 sexual encounter until after the 2016 election, when Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton.
