India awaits clarity on Trump's tariffs; officials say New Delhi will react after US makes announcement
Donald Trump has indicated that there will not be too many exceptions to his reciprocal tariff announcement on April 2. «We don't know what will happen. There is a bit of uncertainty around that. Whether tariffs will be announced or imposed on us, we will see what comes and adequately react,» said an official. Another official said the Indian industry is worried about the US' plan and wants early conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement. «Industry is paranoid. Lot of jobs are at stake. It is demanding to do it (BTA) as fast as possible otherwise they will suffer from the US reciprocal tariffs,» the official said, adding that the industry wants to avert or delay tariffs. In the scenario the tariffs are imposed as threatened, industry wants protection from the impact and has written to the government regarding the same, according to the official.

3-Judge panel to speed up probe into charges against Justice Sanjiv Varma
After having commenced their probe on Tuesday, the three judges will remain in New Delhi for the next few days to continue the probe and examine the allegations levelled against justice Varma. The three-judge committee will also examine justice Varma after perusing the evidence and information made available to it. «The objective is to ensure that the inquiry is completed without any undue delay. The inquiry has been fast tracked to dispel the misbelief, if any, that truth will be brushed under the carpet,» said an individual privy to the development. As per the laid-down procedure, the probe being carried out by the committee is «not a formal judicial inquiry involving the examination and cross-examination of witnesses and representation by lawyers». After completing its «fact-finding inquiry», the committee will submit its report to CJI Khanna. It remains to be seen whether SC will again make public the panel's «fact-finding inquiry» report. Previously, in an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court had decided to make public the «in-house inquiry» report prepared by Delhi High Court chief justice Devendra Upadhyaya on SC's website.

India’s onerous taxes are a buzz-kill for likes of Carson Block
Global funds returning to India’s stock market amid a world-beating rally are having to set aside one of the biggest gripes expressed by investors like Muddy Waters Capital LLC founder Carson Block — namely the country’s high taxes. While global funds marked their first weekly purchase of local stocks last week, they have been big sellers this year. In addition to an uncertain economic outlook, they point to New Delhi’s tax code, which imposes high capital gains levies on overseas funds. That’s an approach at variance with other countries such as China, which are competing for their money.

Google tax: India mustn’t give up on a fair global taxation regime

This so-called ‘Google tax’—since it impacted this US-based web-search company perhaps the most, though also others like Meta and X—was introduced in 2016, but is abruptly being withdrawn just days before US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs go into force from 2 April.

India’s US trade deal at risk without fast-track authority: GTRI
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. NEW DELHI : India is advancing negotiations on a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the US—what would typically be called a free trade agreement (FTA)—but a critical gap in Washington’s trade framework threatens to complicate the deal. Unlike past trade agreements, any pact India finalizes could face prolonged scrutiny and potential amendments by US lawmakers, as the country currently lacks Fast Track Trade Authority (FTTA)—a mechanism that allows the US president to negotiate trade deals and present them for a simple up-or-down vote in Congress.

Need for institutional reforms, improved workplace facilities for women in security forces: RS MP
challenges faced by women in security forces. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the NCP-SCP member recalled that after the tragic stampede at the New Delhi railway station on February 15, a photo went viral, showing a woman RPF constable patrolling the station with her one-year-old child strapped to her chest. «While glorified by the RPF as a symbol of Nari Shakti, I believe that the photo actually highlights the systemic challenges faced by women personnel in insecurity forces and the failure of the system to provide basic support to working mothers,» she said. Highlighting that women in security forces already face significant challenges, Khan said the nature of security work directly clashes with the consistent care that young children need. «What is needed is toilets, creches, baby care or breastfeeding rooms everywhere so that women can effectively manage both their professional and maternal responsibilities,» she said. The leader also pointed out that the government's goal of increasing female representation in security forces, which currently stands at a mere 4.4 per cent in central armed police forces, must be supported by sustainable policies.

India’s top oil and gas explorer prepares for a looming glut
Oil and Natural Gas Corp. is seeking to diversify its portfolio to shield its core business from volatile oil prices, said Arunangshu Sarkar, director for strategy at the state-run giant. The company’s multi-pronged approach involves entering the refining and petrochemical sectors, trading liquefied natural gas and growing its renewable capacity. According to the International Energy Agency, the world is entering an era of cheaper energy prices, with growing electricity use leading to a surplus of oil and gas. ONGC is among the several oil majors looking to diversify their business strategies as the global economy moves away from fossil fuels.

India to seek tariff reprieve in meeting with US officials
bilateral trade agreement, people familiar with the matter said. Brendan Lynch, US assistant trade representative for South and Central Asia, and a team of officials will visit India from March 25-29 as part of ongoing trade discussions, the US embassy in New Delhi said in a statement Monday. Officials in New Delhi are expected to make the case for a reprieve from reciprocal tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect on April 2, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. The two sides are expected to discuss a framework for a bilateral trade deal, after which formal negotiations would start, they said. Aside from trade officials, Lynch is also likely to meet Vikram Misri, India’s foreign secretary, during the visit, one of the people said. “We look forward to productive and constructive discussions with the incoming US delegation to expand and deepen our bilateral trade and economic ties in a mutually beneficial manner,” India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

US bilateral trade pact round-I to focus on duty sops for goods
India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) will primarily focus on duty concessions on goods and New Delhi is hopeful of the pact bringing predictability in tariffs, regulations and investment climate, officials said on Monday. Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch is in New Delhi starting Tuesday for three days of negotiations on the proposed trade deal. His visit comes ahead of the April 2 deadline for likely imposition of reciprocal tariffs on all countries, including India, by the Trump administration. The proposed India-US trade pact is likely to be finalised in two tranches with the first phase expected to focus on issues concerning bilateral goods trade, though full clarity on the issue will emerge by the end of this week, the officials said. They added that both sides are expected to finalise the contours, schedule of negotiations, and terms of reference of the proposed BTA during Lynch's visit. The first tranche of the deal is targeted for completion by Fall of 2025. India said it is looking forward to «productive and constructive discussions» with the incoming US delegation to «expand and deepen our bilateral trade and economic ties in a mutually beneficial manner».

For Russia, Donald Trump has a lot to offer, even without a Ukraine deal
Donald Trump says he is focused on stopping the «death march» in Ukraine «as soon as possible.» But for Russian President Vladimir Putin, ceasefire talks with Trump are a means to much broader ends. Russian and U.S. officials are set to meet in Saudi Arabia on Monday to deepen their negotiations about technical details of a partial ceasefire to halt attacks on energy facilities and on ships in the Black Sea. While Ukraine says it's ready for a full truce, Putin has made it clear that he will seek a wide range of concessions first. The upshot: Russia appears determined to squeeze as many benefits as possible from Trump's desire for a Ukraine peace deal, even as it slow-walks the negotiations. Viewed from Russia, better ties with the United States are an economic and geopolitical boon — one that may be achieved even as Russian missiles continue pounding Ukraine. Interviews last week with senior Russian foreign-policy figures at a security conference in New Delhi suggested that Russia saw negotiations over Ukraine and over U.S.-Russia ties as running on two separate tracks. Putin continues to seek a far-reaching victory in Ukraine but is humoring Trump's ceasefire push to seize the benefits of a thaw with the United States.
