New Delhi: In light of the Nipah virus outbreak in the Kozhikode region of Kerala, the Karnataka government has issued an advisory asking individuals to refrain from travelling to the affected areas of the neighbouring state. The Karnataka government has also instructed its officials to enhance surveillance efforts in bordering districts such as Kodagu, Dakshin Kannada, Chamarajanagar, and Mysore to prevent any potential entry of Nipah cases into the state. Nipah virus is an extremely lethal infection that has already affected four individuals and claimed two lives in Kozhikode district, Kerala so far this year.

This measure is aimed at preventing the spread of the infection into Karnataka, stating, “Avoid unnecessary travel of the general public from Karnataka to the affected area of Kerala." “Setting up check posts for fever surveillance at the point of entry from Karnataka to Kerala.

Rain updates: The Indian Meteorological Department has issue a yellow alert for heavy rains in several Maharashtra districts today i.e. on 15 September. As per IMD, yellow alert has been issued in Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Satara, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbani, Akola, Amravati, Nagpur among other districts.

New Delhi: In view of Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, the Union minister of state (health) Bharati Pravin Pawar reviewed the steps taken by the Centre and the state governments to contain the spread of the virus. She visited the ICMR’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune to discuss the matter with the scientists who are closely monitoring the situation. The Central government has deputed a high-level team from NIV with mobile units equipped with BSL-3 laboratories to Kerala’s Kozhikode to conduct on-ground testing.

Nipah in Kerala: With India on high alert after a resurgence of the potentially deadly Nipah virus (NiV), which has killed at least two people in recent days. The virus strain seen in the state was the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate, though it is less infectious. Now Former Health Minister and senior ruling CPI(M) MLA K K Shailaja has shared an update saying that the state has nothing to worry about the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode as the situation is not as scary as it was in 2018.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Wednesday will hold an all-India coordination meeting in Pune. The three-day meeting will discuss a range of topics such as national security, socioeconomic scenarios, among others. Wayanad and Malappuram districts after Nipah virus infection was confirmed in Kozhikode. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the health department has contacted the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and assured the availability of monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of Nipah patients admitted at a private hospital. The health department has already issued an alert in Kozhikode following two deaths due to fever. The samples were sent to the Pune Institute of Virology to confirm whether it was Nipah and the administration intensified containment efforts. The Health Minister informed that defence operations were started in advance adding that contact tracing and surveillance operations in the area are also underway. Minister Veena George held a meeting with the district last night to evaluate the situation and take necessary measures. The Health Minister and Public Works Department Minister Mohammed Riyaz reached Kozhikode earlier on Tuesday to coordinate the activities with the district administration. An emergency meeting was held with MLAs of the district, people's representatives of the affected areas, the district collector, senior officials of the health department and other officials of the district. According to a government release, a Nipah control room has been opened in the district and the numbers are (0495 2383100, 0495 2383101, 0495 2384100, 0495 2384101, 0495 2386100). Minister Veena George also visited Kozhikode Medical College and evaluated the arrangements. The Minister also ensured the availability of PPE kits for patient care, N95 masks and other protective equipment for the medical staff.
