Pakistan's development expenditure has nearly come to a standstill, with just Rs 22.5 billion spent in the first two months (July-August) of the fiscal year, against an annual budget allocation of Rs 950 billion, Dawn reported. This amount included Rs 2.8 billion utilised by water sector projects, Rs 1.5 billion in the power sector, and an additional Rs 1.4 billion in the information technology and telecom sector, covering both local and international contractual obligations.

Nipah virus has reared its ugly head in India yet again. Yesterday, about six individuals in Kerala tested positive for the virus. According to a WHO report, while not as contagious as the Covid-19, the Nipah virus (named after a village in Malaysia where the first outbreak occurred in the late ‘90s), is far more deadly, with a fatality rate of 30-70 per cent!

Nipah virus has been reported in Kerala, triggering a panic in the southern state of India. Nipah virus is caused by fruit bats and is potentially fatal to humans as well as animals. Along with respiratory illness, it is also known to cause fever, muscular pain, headache, fever, dizziness, and nausea.

Nipah in Kerala: With India on high alert after a resurgence of the potentially deadly Nipah virus (NiV), which has killed at least two people in recent days. The virus strain seen in the state was the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate, though it is less infectious. Now Former Health Minister and senior ruling CPI(M) MLA K K Shailaja has shared an update saying that the state has nothing to worry about the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode as the situation is not as scary as it was in 2018.

Kozhikode, Kerala, has been diagnosed with Nipah fever, adding to the mounting number of cases. This development comes just a day after four people were proven to be afflicted with the Nipah virus, two of whom tragically died. With this recent case, the total count of Nipah patients receiving treatment in the district now stands at three. The other two individuals are the nine-year-old son and the 25-year-old brother-in-law of Mohammedali (47), the index case, who regrettably succumbed to the virus on August 30.

In the wake of Nipah infection rise, State Health Minister Veena George said that the virus strain seen in Kerala was the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human and has a high mortality rate, though it is less infectious. The Health Minister on Tuesday confirmed that the two people died at a private hospital on Monday in Kozhikode due to Nipah infection.
