N. Korea's Kim dismisses military chief, calls for war preparations
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has dismissed his top general and called for stepping up war preparations «in an offensive way», including boosting weapons production and conducting more drills, state media reported Thursday. With a cigarette in hand, Kim was shown talking to a room full of uniformed top generals, and pointing at maps, images in state media showed, while he discussed «major military actions» against South Korea at a meeting of the Central Military Commission. The Korean Central News Agency said the agenda of the meeting, which comes just days after Kim inspected key arms factories, was «the issue of making full war preparations» and ensuring «perfect military readiness for a war». The meeting comes as Seoul and Washington prepare for major joint drills later this month, which the North views as rehearsals for invasion and has repeatedly warned could trigger «overwhelming» action in response. At the meeting, Kim dismissed chief of the general staff Pak Su Il, replacing him with Vice Marshal Ri Yong Gil, KCNA said without giving further details.

Donald Trump wants his election subversion trial moved out of Washington; that won't be easy
Trump and his legal team face long odds in their bid to move his 2020 election conspiracy trial out of Washington, arguing the Republican can't possibly get a fair trial in the overwhelmingly Democratic nation's capital. Criminal defendants routinely try to have their cases moved to increase their chances of getting a favourable jury. Trump and his attorney say they're eying West Virginia, which Trump easily won in 2020.

Beyonce pays $100,000 to extend D.C. Metro train hours for fans. See what happened
Renaissance World Tour performance at FedEx Field during the Washington, D.C. stop on Sunday, August 6, the show's start time was significantly delayed. Recognizing the predicament faced by her devoted fans, Beyoncé, in a remarkable display of compassion, took it upon herself to cover the $100,000 expenses required to extend the operating hours of the D.C. Metro trains by an additional hour. This thoughtful gesture ensured that concertgoers had a reliable means of transportation to return home safely after the extended show. A press release from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority confirmed that the generous contribution would facilitate the continued operation of all 98 metro stations, enabling concert attendees to exit smoothly and ensuring the necessary operational support. Despite the setbacks, Beyoncé delivered an impressive performance for D.C. concert goers on the rain-soaked night. The show was the second of two at FedEx Field and featured a playful challenge where she dared the audience to stay quiet during a specific song lyric. Notable attendees on the first night included Vice President Kamala Harris, Douglas Emhoff and Malia Obama. The Renaissance World Tour is currently touring North America after a successful European leg that earned $154 million from 21 shows. The tour supports Beyoncé's seventh solo studio album, Renaissance, which includes hit songs like «Break My Soul» and «Cuff It.» The album topped the Billboard 200 chart and produced Grammy-winning tracks.

Former US president Donald Trump to seek new judge in election conspiracy trial
Donald Trump said Sunday he will petition to have a different judge oversee his historic criminal trial and for the case to be moved out of Washington. The twice-impeached Republican, who is seeking a return to the White House in 2024, has unleashed a stream of invective against those prosecuting him or running the case in which he faces charges over attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and defraud the United States. His latest target: US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, the appointee of Democratic former president Barack Obama who was randomly assigned to the case in Washington.

Donald Trump claims he can’t get a fair trial in ‘filthy’ Washington; seeks new judge in US poll conspiracy case
Former President Donald Trump attacked the nation’s capital as a “filthy and crime-ridden embarrassment" as the leading Republican candidate in the 2024 race seeks to move his federal trial on conspiracy and obstruction charges to a more politically friendly venue. “NO WAY I CAN GET A FAIR TRIAL, OR EVEN CLOSE TO A FAIR TRIAL, IN WASHINGTON, D.C.," Trump wrote in an all-capital-letters post on Truth Social, his social media site. He called for a US takeover of the city — which has limited home-rule powers under congressional supervision — a move he said would be unpopular with potential jurors.

Russia said Saturday it scrambled an Su-30 fighter jet to «prevent a violation of the Russian state border» by a US Reaper MQ-9 military drone over the Black Sea. «As the Russian fighter approached, the foreign reconnaissance drone performed a U-turn away from the border,» the Russian defence ministry said.
