DeepSeek and Alibaba rescue China’s office landlords

This may come as a relief to plenty of people in a metropolis that is home to Alibaba, one of Chinese tech’s mightiest titans, with a total payroll of 128,000 employees. It is also good for Hangzhou’s commercial landlords, who have little use for AI agents and are desperate for human desk jockeys.China’s dazzling skylines are worryingly lifeless.

Bombshell report: U.S government knew Wuhan lab leak was responsible for Covid, but deliberately downplayed it
Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and EcoHealth Alliance. This effort aimed to collect and study 500,000 unknown viruses with the potential to infect humans, costing an estimated $3 billion. The project, co-led by EcoHealth's Peter Daszak and Wuhan’s Shi Zhengli, proceeded despite biosafety concerns and warnings about national security risks. New documents obtained by US Right to Know (USRTK) highlight these concerns just months before the Covid-19 outbreak. The Global Virome Project aimed to identify and experiment with 99% of undiscovered viruses that could jump from animals to humans. Supported by USAID and the US State Department from 2016 to 2019, the project also involved China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), a company later blacklisted by the Pentagon. The initiative faced scrutiny over transparency, data ownership, and potential national security threats, as the US and Chinese governments were warned about each other’s involvement. Donald Trump picks hardline Republican Kari Lake to lead Voice of America
Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was picking Kari Lake, a former news anchor and a hardline Republican who failed to win an Arizona Senate seat last month, to be the director of U.S. government-funded media outlet Voice of America. Trump, in a post on his Truth Social site, said Lake will «ensure that the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY, unlike the lies spread by the Fake News Media.» Lake, a strong Trump supporter who has echoed his false claims about fraud at the 2020 election, also lost the governor's race in swing state Arizona in 2022 and was previously an anchor at Phoenix-based Fox 10.

Wuhan is in the news again after the COVID-19 outbreak; this time a Chinese attack submarine sank at a shipyard in the city
Wuhan shipyard, one of China's most recent nuclear-powered assault submarines sank, a US official confirmed, as per reports by Business Insider. The Chinese submarine, which was recorded in the Wuchang shipyard in Wuhan in late May, is believed to be the newest Zhou-class ship. However, it sank at some point after that. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the occurrence. Big, floating cranes were close to the pier in June, according to satellite photos taken by Planet Labs after it sank. It's thought that China has been trying to recover the ship. It was the first submarine of its type to sink. Thomas Shugart, a retired US submarine officer and adjunct senior scholar at the Center for American Security think tank, initially shared pictures of cranes gathered around an object in the water on X in July, near the location where the new submarine had previously been. He also mentioned the oil containment boom and conjectured that odd things were going on. Shugart posted online satellite photos from July 5 that revealed the cranes had moved, presumably completing the presumed salvage operation.

University in China, which allegedly triggered Covid-19 outbreak, comes up with nasal vaccine to stop future pandemics
South China Morning Post report, a group of scientists from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China have created a nano vaccine candidate that may provide broad protection against all significant Covid-19 variants, as well as future coronavirus strains. The institute, known for its long-standing research on bat coronaviruses, has faced intense scrutiny, particularly from countries like the United States, due to allegations that the Covid-19 pandemic may have resulted from a lab leak at its facilities. Despite the ongoing controversy, researchers at the institute, with steadfast backing from the Chinese government, have pressed on with their studies into Sars-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19. While current vaccines have been effective in slowing the spread of the virus and lowering death rates, the team behind the new nano vaccine notes that none of the existing options provide comprehensive or universal protection against all variants of the virus.

Why 'Stupid Radishes' are causing panic in China
ride-hailing drivers are facing the threat of job loss from artificial intelligence as robotaxis begin to proliferate. Self-driving technology, still experimental, is being aggressively greenlit in China compared to the US, where approvals are often suspended after accidents. At least 19 Chinese cities are testing robotaxis and robobuses, with seven cities approving tests without human-driver monitors from at least five industry leaders: Apollo Go, Pony.ai, WeRide, AutoX, and SAIC Motor. Apollo Go, a subsidiary of technology giant Baidu, plans to deploy 1,000 robotaxis in Wuhan by year-end and operate in 100 cities by 2030. Pony.ai, backed by Japan's Toyota Motor, operates 300 robotaxis with plans to increase to 1,000 by 2026. WeRide is known for autonomous taxis, vans, buses, and street sweepers, while AutoX, backed by Alibaba Group, operates in cities including Beijing and Shanghai. SAIC Motor has been operating robotaxis since 2021. In the US, Alphabet's Waymo operates uncrewed robotaxis that collect fares, with over 1,000 cars in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Cruise, backed by General Motors, resumed testing in April after an accident last year.

China allows robotaxis without operators in Shanghai
China has added Shanghai to a list of top-tier cities allowing the use of driverless robotaxis in which no safety supervisors are present, part of the country’s efforts to take the global lead in autonomous driving and commercialize the technology. Shanghai officials said over the weekend that in parts of the city, residents can now book free rides in robotaxis of four companies—internet search giant Baidu, SAIC Motor-owned Saike Technology and self-driving startups Pony.ai and Auto X. The taxis are driverless and don’t have supervisors physically present in the car, with the companies approved to offer services through Jan.
