CCI approves re-balancing of cross-shareholdings between Renault and Nissan
Competition Commission of India (CCI) has cleared a combination proposal for the re-balancing of existing cross-shareholdings between Renault and Nissan, the regulator said on Thursday. The proposal also relates to certain changes to the shareholding of two of their joint ventures in India--Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd and Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India Private Ltd, the CCI said in a statement. Nissan, through Nissan Finance Co, will retain its 15% shareholding in Renault. Renault will transfer 28.4% of its Nissan shares into a trust estate administered by a trustee governed by French law, where the entrusted shares will be voted neutrally, subject to limited exceptions. Renault would continue to fully benefit from the economic rights from the entrusted shares until such shares are sold. “Accordingly, Renault and Nissan will have a cross-shareholding of 15% of the total issued share capital and freely exercisable voting rights in each other, that is, both Renault and Nissan will hold 15% shareholding in each other,” the CCI said, adding that a detailed order will come in due course. Nissan and its affiliate entities in India are engaged in the sale of passenger vehicles and automotive parts, through its fully-owned arm Nissan Motor India Private Ltd.

China's youngest-ever crew of astronauts heads to space station
astronauts departed for China's space station on Thursday, paving the way for a new generation of «taikonauts» to advance the country's space ambitions in the future. The spacecraft Shenzhou-17, or «Divine Vessel», and its three passengers lifted off atop a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China. Leading the six-month mission was former air force pilot Tang Hongbo, 48, who was on the first crewed mission to the space station in 2021. His return to the orbiting outpost Tiangong, or «Celestial Palace» in Chinese, also set a new record for the shortest interval between two spaceflight missions by taikonauts — coined from the Chinese word for space — suggesting a faster rotation of taikonauts in coming years. Tang, from China's second batch of astronauts in 2010, had to wait more than a decade before he was picked for his inaugural spaceflight in 2021. By contrast, his fellow Shenzhou-17 crew members Tang Shengjie, 33, and Jiang Xinlin, 35, both travelling to space for the first time, joined China's third batch of astronauts in September 2020. China has already kickstarted the selection process for the fourth batch of astronauts, seeking candidates with doctoral degrees in disciplines from biology, physics and chemistry to biomedical engineering and astronomy. It is also opening the process to applicants from Hong Kong and Macau for the first time. The first and second batches of astronauts were all former air force pilots, like Tang, who joined the People's Liberation Army in 1995 at age 20.

Ontario NDP removes Sarah Jama from caucus after Israel-Hamas comments
Sarah Jama from caucus.Stiles says the member for Hamilton Centre, who has been under fire for comments about the Israel-Hamas conflict, made what Stiles calls “a number of unilateral actions” that have undermined the party’s collective work and broken the trust of her colleagues.Jama spoke this morning in the legislature against a motion to censure her for a statement she made on the conflict between Israel and Hamas. She said Premier Doug Ford’s government is targeting her to distract from its own scandals, and also said that governments and institutions in Canada are trying to use their voice and weight to silence people who support Palestinians. The Progressive Conservative motion would effectively silence Jama in the legislature and calls on the Speaker not to recognize her in the House until she retracts her original statement and apologizes again.Jama’s original statement, on social media, decried “the generations long occupation of Palestine” without mentioning the attack by Hamas militants on Israeli civilians.Stiles had originally defended Jama after the legislator issued an apology for her initial statement, but now says in a statement that she and Jama had agreed that in order for her to stay in caucus they would work together “in good faith with no surprises” but now some of her actions “have contributed to unsafe work environments for staff.”
