The failure is costing well over $400 billion dollars a year in damages and lost income — the equivalent to the GDP of Denmark or Thailand — and that is likely a «gross underestimation», according to the intergovernmental science advisory panel for the UN Convention on Biodiversity (IPBES). From water hyacinth choking Lake Victoria in East Africa, to rats and brown snakes wiping out bird species in the Pacific, to mosquitoes exposing new regions to Zika, yellow fever, dengue and other diseases, the report catalogued more than 37,000 so-called alien species that have taken root — often literally — far from their places of origin. That number is trending sharply upward, along with the bill for the damage multiplying fourfold per decade, on average, since 1970. Economic expansion, population increase and climate change «will increase the frequency and extent of biological invasions and the impacts of invasive alien species,» the report concluded. Only 17 percent of countries have laws or regulations to manage this onslaught, it said. Marilyn Lovell, known for her courage during the Apollo 13 accident, passed away at 93 on August 27 in Lake Forest, Illinois. Her husband, Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell, was by her side. During Apollo 8's moon flight in 1968, her husband named a small moon mountain after her, calling it Mount Marilyn. Marilyn Lillie Lovell was born on July 11, 1930, in Milwaukee, WI, as the youngest of five siblings. She graduated from Juneau High School in Milwaukee, where she met her future husband, James A Lovell, Jr. She attended George Washington University in Washington DC to be closer to him while he attended the U.S. Naval Academy. They married right after his graduation in Annapolis, MD. Marilyn was an active member of the original «Astronaut's Wives Club,» supporting her husband's NASA career. She is survived by her husband, Captain James A Lovell, Jr; four children Barbara Harrison (Ken), James Lovell III (Darice), Susan Lovell, Jeffrey Lovell (Annie); Eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Texas resident was infected with a brain-eating amoeba when he went swimming in Lake Lyndon B. Johnson and died later. On Friday he interacted with youth in Leh. According to the party sources, Rahul Gandhi will also watch a football match in Leh. Rahul has been a footballer player during his college days. He will also participate in the meeting of the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil elections on August 25, they said. Congress and National Conference have forged a pre-poll alliance against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Kargil council polls scheduled to be held on September 10.
