The three main stock market indexes in the country, the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq, primarily include large-cap companies. However, there are also other indexes composed of small-cap companies, such as the S&P 600 and the Russell 2000.

There was some concern heading into Friday that Thursday's gains were going to be clawed back, but I was surprised by the extent of the buying that did show up. The Nasdaq and S&P had the best of the action.

A short week for the markets has opened with some modest selling, hardest felt in the Russell 2000 (IWM), but common across all lead indexes.

Today was one of those days where I was waiting (and waiting) for the profit-taking to kick in, but by the time sellers made their appearance I had reached my loss limit for the day and so that, was that.

It has been a relatively slow start to the week given what is at stake we remain waiting for the potential breakout in the Russell 2000 (IWM).

Whether you see the past week-and-a-half action in the Russell 2000 (IWM) as a bullish ascending triangle or pennant, it's clear there is a significant bullish turn in momentum since the early November gap higher (on higher volume accumulation).

saxophone player Mars Williams has passed away at the age 68. He was known for his work as a member of the Waitresses and later the Psychedelic Furs. Last Friday was a good day for indexes as both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were able to close near the highs of the week, while Thursday's losses in the Russell 2000 (IWM) were reversed by Friday's narrow range day near the previous day's highs.

The Russell 2000 (IWM) is the canary in the coal mine for markets and yesterday's action is not great news for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, despite the latter indexes doing 'okay' yesterday. Selling volume rose to rank as distribution with a 'sell' trigger for On-Balance-Volume.

It has been a tough start to the week for the Russell 2000 via (IWM). A bearish end to the week last has been followed by a disappointing Monday. The measured move target marked on my chart offered a launch point for a rally, but this rally quickly got overwhelmed by a former support level, which turned resistance, around $178.

While the Russell 2000 has recovered from breaks of its 200-week MA before, every such test (and break) of the moving average increases the chance of a flip from a level of support to resistance.

Today's price action will determine how we finish on weekly time frames, but the likelihood of an ugly close to the end of the week is high.

sexual assault complaint related to recent accusations against Russell Brand. During the weekend, Russell Brand, the comedian, actor, and TV host, faced allegations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013. These allegations emerged from a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches. Brand vehemently denied all accusations. A Scotland Yard spokesperson conveyed awareness of the allegations reported by The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches. The Met received a report on Sunday, September 17, about a sexual assault claim dating back to 2003 in Soho, central London. The police are providing support to the woman involved and maintaining contact with her. Scotland Yard emphasized its engagement with The Sunday Times on September 16 and subsequent efforts to ensure that potential victims of sexual offenses know how to report incidents to the police. They urged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offense, regardless of when it occurred, to come forward. In the wake of the exposé published on September 16, the BBC, Channel 4, and Banijay UK, where Russell Brand worked during the alleged period, initiated their independent internal investigations. Channel 4, where Brand gained fame as the host of Big Brother's Big Mouth, disclosed via an email to its staff that it is probing whether anyone within the network had knowledge of the alleged behaviors.

The selling of the last few days hasn't abated, and we have a situation where the Russell 2000 (IWM) is now looking at a test of its 200-day MA.
