After helping Trump win, Elon Musk backs far-right causes in UK, EU
Elon Musk’s opinions have often landed him in controversy, but that hasn’t stopped him. Through his social media platform X, Musk has become a vocal commentator on global politics, fuelling debates and shaping narratives. His involvement in Donald Trump’s 2024 US presidential election victory highlights how he leverages X to amplify his political influence and forge alliances with key figures. In November, Trump announced that Musk would lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside Indian American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Experts believe his advisory influence could shape national and international policies, potentially benefiting his ventures, including X, Tesla, and SpaceX.

You might want to skip these European countries on your next trip. Here's why
air pollution. Some regions of Europe face far higher pollution risks than others, making them less ideal destinations for travellers. In 2021, the World Health Organisation (WHO) updated its air quality guidelines, lowering the recommended threshold for annual concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) such as dust, smoke, and soot from exhaust. Mercedes-Benz 2024 car sales fall in tough year for automakers
Mercedes-Benz's core car sales fell in 2024, a tough year for the auto industry marked by waning demand in a weak economy, especially in key market China, the German luxury carmaker said on Friday. It sold 1,983,400 cars during the year, down 3% versus 2023, weighed down by a 7% drop in China and a 3% decline in Europe. Annual sales of battery-electric cars (BEV) dropped by 23% to 185,100 vehicles, adding pressure on the carmaker as new, harsher EU CO2 emission reduction targets take effect this year, which could potentially mean costly pooling deals or hefty fines for Mercedes if the BEV sales don't pick up.

Donald Trump's United States faces economic downturn. Will China outpace World's largest economy?
Donald Trump is scheduled to take charge as the President of United States of America on January 22 and will announce a slew of policy-related decisions. However, the US is likely to witness a slow GDP growth in 2025. The world economy resisted battering by conflicts and inflation last year and is expected to grow a subdued 2.8 per cent in 2025, the United Nations said Thursday. In «World Economic Situation and Prospects 2025,» UN economists wrote that their positive prediction was driven by the strong although slowing growth forecast for China and the United States and by the robust performances anticipated for India and Indonesia. The European Union, Japan, and United Kingdom are expected to experience modest recovery, the report says. The report says the US economy outperformed expectations last year thanks to consumer and public-sector spending, but growth is expected to slow from 2.8% to 1.9 per cent this year.

How Musk's interview with German AfD leader squares with EU laws
Elon Musk's expected hosting of Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, for a discussion on his X platform on Thursday was being watched by the European Commission to check for any spreading of misinformation before next month's German election. The European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) is intended to address illegal content such as hate speech and intentional manipulation to influence elections. X has been under investigation under the DSA since 2023 over suspected dissemination of illegal content and the effectiveness of its measures to combat information manipulation.

Planning a Europe trip? Travel permit for Canadians is delayed
getting a travel permit – for now – as the rollout of a new entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals has been delayed. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) was due to launch last year, requiring Canadian passport holders among others travelling to any of these 30 European countries for a short stay to apply for the permit. To support the ETIAS rollout, the European Commission is planning to put in place an automated IT system, called Entry-Exit System (EES), to register non-EU nationals who travel for short visits to 30 EU member states and Schengen associated countries.A European Commission spokesperson told Global News on Monday that the commission along with EU member states and eu-LISA, which is an IT agency of the European Union, have “made significant efforts” to launch the EES before the end of 2024.“However, the implementation of a large-scale IT system like EES is a complex operation and delays could not be completely excluded,” the spokesperson said in an emailed response. The commission had also not received “the required declarations of readiness from all member states, which is a legal requirement to be able to start the operation of the system,” the spokesperson added.A proposal was put forward by the commission last month for a “progressive start of operations” of the EES, but that has yet to be adopted.“When the proposal is adopted and enters into force, the commission will decide on the date of the progressive start of the EES, after having received all declarations of readiness from Member States,” the spokesperson said.“At the latest six months from the progressive launch, the EES will have to operate at its full capacity.”The ETIAS rollout is expected six months after the

Crypto bros need to temper their hopes for 2025: Andy Mukherjee
Crypto bros are heading into 2025 with great expectations. For the $135 million they have donated to President-elect Donald Trump and dozens of successful congressional campaigns, they want unhindered access to the global banking system and an end to lawsuits against the industry by the Securities and Exchange Commission. A strategic US reserve dedicated to Bitcoin will be the icing on their cake. Don’t be surprised, however, if the actual outcome turns out to be less than a libertarian feast.
