'Vanambadi' K S Chitra faces cyber criticism over Lord Ram hymns chanting appeal
Thiruvananthapuram: National award-winning playback singer K S Chitra has faced criticism on social media following her recent video message encouraging people to chant Lord Ram hymns during the upcoming Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22. In the circulated video, the renowned singer urged everyone to chant the 'Sri Rama, Jaya Rama, Jaya Jaya Rama' mantra at 12.20 pm during the consecration ceremony and light five-wick lamps in the evening to mark the occasion. However, the video stirred controversy, with some netizens expressing disapproval, stating that she shouldn't have endorsed the Ram Temple and accusing her of taking political sides. Others, though, supported Chitra, asserting her right to express her opinion freely.

Europe’s Growth Engine Is Broken
Germany is stuck in a rut, and there is no quick way out. The European powerhouse’s economy, the largest on the continent and the world’s fourth biggest, shrank last year, extending a six-year slump that is raising fears of deindustrialization and sapping support for governments across the region. Output in the country likely shrank by 0.3% in the three months through December from the previous quarter, the German federal statistics agency said Monday.

Osaka crashes out as Medvedev, Gauff power on at Australian Open
Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka's Grand Slam comeback ended abruptly Monday, crashing out to Caroline Garcia, but US Open winner Coco Gauff and men's third seed Daniil Medvedev surged on in Melbourne. On a baking-hot day at Melbourne Park, men's seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and women's sixth seed Ons Jabeur also tasted first-round victory. But Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and veteran Andy Murray made early exits. Japanese star Osaka, 26, stepped away from the sport in September 2022, citing mental health concerns. After giving birth to a baby girl in July, she decided to return for the new season and was back at the scene of her title-winning exploits in 2019 and 2021. But she was unable to rediscover her championship-winning form against 16th-seeded Frenchwoman Garcia after just two competitive games in Brisbane since returning. «She's been through a lot but I'm just very glad to see her back and I hope she can enjoy the tennis now and have fun out there.

Resist temptation: The interim budget must show fiscal prudence
Every budget poses a dilemma for the government. If Hamlet’s question was “to do or not to do," the one before every elected administration is how far it should throw caution to the winds on populism. Should it take the ‘apres moi le deluge’ (after me the deluge) approach of Louis XV of France, spend its way to popularity and election victory? Or should it take a long-term view and do what is eventually best for the country? Economists call this the ‘time inconsistency’ problem.

Life isn't about adjusting to one's external environment
Like you, I have been trained to believe that adaptation to environment is life. Something about the word ‘adaptation’ gives us the sense that it is the smart thing for an organism to do. And who can have a quarrel with ‘the environment’, the lovely blue and green brine in which we pickle, which leaks into us now and then and alters us to be better? So, when I read a paragraph that rubbished this view in an off-hand way, I was startled in the way other people’s insight could affect me in my teens.

What to expect from the grand Davos meet
NEW DELHI : Leaders from across the world will congregate in the picturesque Swiss town for the 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, high inflation and tepid global growth. Mint explains the agenda this year: “Rebuilding Trust" is the theme, to resurrect globalization after global supply chains were disrupted due to the pandemic and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. With other problems such as climate change, business leaders are expected to brainstorm on long-term solutions and the role of cutting edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Ancient ‘lost valley of cities’ found in Amazon rainforest
Amazon rainforest has revealed evidence it was once a large-scale hub of interconnected cities that date back more than 2,500 years. The findings were published Thursday in the journal Science and detail the researchers’ work in mapping the network of settlements, which may be the earliest example of urbanism ever documented in the Amazon.“It was a lost valley of cities,” said Stéphen Rostain, first author of the study and a director of France’s National Center for Scientific Research. “It’s incredible.”The team of researchers identified at least 15 distinct settlements connected by a network of roads that stretched 10 to 20 kilometres.

Wounded Novak Djokovic faces fire from young guns at Australian Open
Novak Djokovic will bring his simmering rivalry with two young guns of the men's game to the Australian Open where his hunt for a record-extending 11th title and 25th Grand Slam crown overall carries an air of inevitability despite an early loss in 2024. The 36-year-old defied the odds to raise the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup last year as he overcame a ruptured hamstring and a distracting political row involving his father to win, before going past Rafa Nadal's tally of 22 majors at the French Open. He claimed a third Grand Slam trophy late last season at the U.S.

BO 2024 report: Bollywood’s 1st offering ‘Merry Christmas’ starts slow, earns Rs 2.5 cr on day 1; Telugu film ‘Hanu Man’ crosses Rs 11 cr on opening day
Merry Christmas’. The Vijay Sethupathy-Katrina Kaif’s film has had a slow start at the box-office so far. As per a report by the Indian box-office tracking portalSacnilk.com, the Sriram Raghavan film earned just over Rs 2.5 crore on opening day. The mystery drama is expected to earn Rs 0.41 crore on day two. However, the performances of the cast have been more or less unanimously praised. The plot and the cinematography — an unconditional love letter penned by Raghavan to the ‘80s decade have also been appreciated so far. Helmed by Raghavan (of ‘Johnny Gadar’, ‘Andhadhun’ and ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ fame), ‘Merry Christmas’ is a neo-noir romance. It revolves around two strangers — Albert and Mary who chance upon each other on a Christmas evening. However, their budding romance is interrupted rudely by a gruesome murder. The plot of the film is loosely based on the mystery novel ‘Bird In A Cage’ by French author Frederic Dard.
