Immigrants killed in Baltimore bridge collapse died doing job 'others do not want to do'
The six victims of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse were all immigrants from Mexico and Central America, doing the kind of grueling work that many immigrants take on, when a container ship crashed into a support pillar at 1:30 a.m. EDT on Tuesday (0530 GMT) and sent them plunging into the icy Patapsco River. Divers pulled the bodies of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and Dorlian Castillo from a red pickup truck 25 feet underwater the following day.

Cargo ship had engine maintenance in port before it collided with Baltimore bridge, officials say
The victims, who were part of a construction crew fixing potholes on the bridge, were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, Butler said. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore addressed their families in Spanish during the news conference, saying, “Estamos contigo, ahora y siempre," which means, “we are with you, now and always." All search efforts have been exhausted, and based on sonar scans, authorities “firmly" believe the other vehicles with victims inside are encased in superstructures and concrete from the collapsed bridge, Butler said.

‘Banana republic’: a label that every country wants to avoid
When Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for new elections aimed at ending the current government in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took umbrage. On CNN last Sunday, Netanyahu called Schumer’s comments about elections “totally inappropriate," adding, “That’s something the Israeli public does on its own. We are not a banana republic." Netanyahu found a receptive ear among Senate Republicans, whom he addressed in a virtual closed-door speech on Wednesday.

China's influence in C.America advances at a gallop
China's growing influence across Central America. With the Chinese ambassador at his side, Bukele toured the seven-story building, erected at a cost of $54 million paid for by China. The building sprawls over 24,000 square meters (260,000 square feet), and contains gamer and robotics areas, interactive digital screens and both a digital library and shelves containing 360,000 books, the government said on Tuesday. A day later, the son of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Laureano Ortega, inspected 250 Chinese-made buses and thanked Beijing for the «special relationship» he asserted was lifting the nation out of poverty. «The new politics of the region has accelerated China's influence and put distance between the United States and Central America, from the leftist authoritarian Ortega regime to the right-wing authoritarian Bukele regime,» Evan Ellis, a researcher at the US Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, told AFP. Since Costa Rica switched diplomatic relations from Taipei to Beijing in 2007, China has steadily gained ground in Central America, establishing relations with Panama (2017), El Salvador (2018), Nicaragua (2021) and most recently Honduras earlier this year. «China's efforts in Central America have mostly been driven by an interest in isolating Taiwan,» Margaret Myers, a specialist in China and Latin America at the Inter-American Dialogue, told AFP. In Central America, only Guatemala and Belize are among the dwindling 13 nations that still maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a self-governing island that China considers part of its territory.

The ‘Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse: When and where to witness this celestial spectacle
solar eclipse produces a mesmerizing "ring of fire." These unique celestial occurrences are similar to total solar eclipses, with one crucial difference — the moon is positioned at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth, preventing it from completely obscuring the sun. This results in a breathtaking display as the sun's brilliant light encircles the moon's shadow.

Transforming mosquitoes from foes to friends in the battle against dengue fever; Everything explained
dengue fever in Honduras has meant teaching people to fear mosquitoes and avoid their bites. Now, Hondurans are being educated about a potentially more effective way to control the disease — and it goes against everything they’ve learned. Which explains why a dozen people cheered last month as Tegucigalpa resident Hector Enriquez held a glass jar filled with mosquitoes above his head, and then freed the buzzing insects into the air.
