National Hispanic Heritage Month began on Friday, September 15, a number of cultural programs celebrating Latino art and culture were held across the country. It is held every year from September 15 to October 15, to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans. Prior to National Hispanic Heritage Month, there was Hispanic Heritage Week. President Lyndon Johnson recognized it as a month of holiday for the first time in 1968.
Celebrations and festivities are being held across the U.S.A. from Los Angeles to Florida. Traditional Latin foods, art, cultural events, and entertainment shows like mariachi bands, Folklorico dancing, and salsa shows are being held to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. These are not limited to Mexican, but there is a mixture of Puerto Rican, Colombian, Argentine, Peruvian and many other identities.
Hispanic Americans are holding festivities in their own ways like Suave Fest, Latino Craft Beer Festival, and New York Latino Film Festival. The Smithsonian Institution has organized special activities in Washington, D.C.to celebrate the Hispanic culture.
Walt Disney World Resort will celebrate the month by releasing live-action versions at Magic Kingdom Park of Mirabel and Bruno. The film narrates the life of a family in Colombia with extraordinary abilities.
Whereas Mexico celebrates its Independence Day on September 16, the Central American nations of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate their independence on September 15.
