Hungary set to ratify Sweden's NATO bid on Feb 26 after long delay
Hungary's ruling Fidesz party proposed on Tuesday that parliament should vote to ratify Sweden's bid to join NATO on Feb. 26, a move that it would support. «Our group wishes to support» Sweden's NATO bid, the Fidesz party said in a document, asking the Speaker of parliament to include the vote in its agenda next Monday. Fidesz has a huge majority in parliament. Sweden applied to join NATO nearly two years ago, in a historic shift in policy prompted by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Mint Primer: From Europe to India, why are farmers angry?
Mint explains: Beginning January, farmers from several member-nations of the European Union (EU)—Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain—invaded cities with their tractors, burning tyres, dumping manure, raiding supermarkets, blocking access to ports and highways and choking city centres. They are protesting subsidy cuts, high energy prices, cheap grain imports from Ukraine, beef imports from Latin America, growing clout of big agribusiness and climate policies limiting the use of chemical inputs. It is a profitability crisis—due to higher farming costs and low produce prices.

Swedes spooked as government, military say to prepare for war
Sweden's government and military urging Swedes to be ready for war has triggered panicked buying, frightened children and a fierce debate in the Nordic country. While Sweden has contributed troops to international peacekeeping missions, the country has not been directly involved in an armed conflict since the Napoleonic era. The realities of war are therefore foreign to most Swedes. «There could be war in Sweden,» Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin told an annual defence conference on Sunday, warning Swedes against complacency. Days later, the sentiment was echoed by the commander of Sweden's armed forces Micael Byden, who showed pictures of burnt out and bombed houses from Ukraine. «Do you believe that this could be Sweden?,» Byden asked the audience, later explaining that the question was not a rhetorical one. "Russia's war against Ukraine is a step, not an end goal, for the ambition to establish spheres of influence and tear down the rule-based world order," he added. Ending two centuries of neutrality and military non-alignment, Sweden applied to join NATO in May 2022, in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, though its bid is currently held up by Turkey and Hungary. In early December, Stockholm and Washington signed a pact paving the way for US forces to operate in Sweden. Byden then went on to say that Swedes needed to «mentally prepare for war.» — Anxious children - The statements were widely spread by news outlets and social media. Subsequently, children's rights group Bris said it had seen a noticeable uptick in calls to its support hotline from children worried about the prospect of an impending war. «Many children already have a level of anxiety that was made worse by this news,»

Ukraine may have to accept a cease-fire
The word “crisis" is overused, but it accurately describes what Ukraine faces as 2024 begins. According to a recent report in the Washington Post, troops on the front line are running out of ammunition. Artillery shells are being rationed, forcing the Ukrainians to cancel planned assaults and making it hard to hold defensive positions against Russian attacks.

Parts of northern and central Europe continues to struggle with floods
Magdeburg for the first time in a decade to alleviate pressure from the swollen Elbe River. The ongoing floods this week prompted evacuations in parts of northern and central Germany, but a dry weather forecast for Thursday offered some relief. Nevertheless, concerns persisted as water levels continued to rise in parts of Lower Saxony state in the northwest. In Dresden, the Elbe River reached nearly 4 meters (13 feet) above its normal level, reported the German news agency dpa. Downstream, the Pretziener Wehr, a flood barrier dating back to the 1870s and renovated in 2010, was opened for the first time since the major floods in 2013. The objective was to divert approximately a third of the river's water into a 21-kilometer (13-mile) channel, bypassing the town of Schoenebeck and the state capital, Magdeburg, in Saxony-Anhalt.

Why the EU’s tougher new migration pact is good for Indians
The European Commission recently approved regulations making it tougher for unintended immigrants to settle down in the European Union. Collectively known as the new EU Pact on Migration, the rules are aimed at restricting the number of new immigrants into the EU, even as member states recognize the need for new workers given the number of ageing individuals. The net result, perversely, might well be an increase in the legal flow of skilled immigrants, such as medical or information technology professionals.
