Airtel, Jio turn focus to wireless home 5G for better monetisation
Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio have ramped up efforts to expand their fixed wireless access (FWA) offerings to provide home broadband services, which is helping them monetise 5G airwaves and boost data usage. The strategy to offer 5G on standalone (SA) technology for FWA helps the telcos reduce dependency on capital-intensive fibre deployments to offer home broadband services in the near-term, analysts said. The 5G on SA technology is a pureplay 5G network, while 5G non-standalone (NSA) technology — which Airtel uses for speedy deployment of pan-India 5G mobile services — entails a lesser investment as it leverages the existing 4G mobile infrastructure, they said.

Why job creation and job quality are the two biggest challenges facing India
India's per capita net national income (NNI) for 2022-23 stands at Rs 1.7 lakh. Despite this impressive growth, the perceived increase in wealth is not universally experienced due to persistent disparities in wealth distribution. Workforce Struggles “Despite growing towards lower levels of poverty, India is alarmingly moving towards a struggling working class at risk of falling into poverty. The latest joint report of ILO and IHD indicated that between 2012-2022, the average monthly real earnings of regular salaried workers declined by 1 percent each year, pointing towards poor-quality employment,” Chandra Shekhar, Partner, Posterity Consulting said. Consumption Patterns and Inflation As per a TOI report, the consumption pattern of India is similar to that of the US in the 1960s. The share of India’s domestic consumption to GDP was around 60% in 2022. As per the report, the Indian population spent nearly 30 percent of their income on food, followed by transportation, housing, and then on clothing, education, health, etc. In comparison, the US spends nearly 50 percent of their income on services, followed by healthcare, housing, and then food.

India must protest very strongly against disqualification of Vinesh Phogat: Sunil Gavaskar
wrestler Vinesh Phogat after she was found to be overweight ahead of her 50kg category Olympic final, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said here on Wednesday. Vinesh was disqualified from taking part in the final for being overweight by 100 grams. Gavaskar said that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as well as the Indian government must do everything possible to address this. «I think it's (the) most unfortunate. I also think it's (the) most unfair. I do hope that the authorities will take notice of it, take a strong response to this because this is not just the initial round,» he told reporters on the sidelines of the Spartan racing event here.

"Huge conspiracy...": Vijender Singh calls out disqualification of Vinesh Phogat as unfair plot
Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024, 2008 Beijing medallist Vijender Singh has voiced his concerns, calling the situation a «huge conspiracy against India.» Speaking exclusively to India Today on August 7, Vijender criticised the decision that barred Phogat from competing in the gold-medal bout against Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States. Phogat was found to be 150 grams over the permissible weight limit, which led to her disqualification. Vijender expressed his frustration, suggesting that the disqualification was part of a broader scheme to undermine Indian wrestlers. “The way she has performed is worth appreciating. Maybe some people couldn’t digest the happiness. We can reduce five to six kilograms in one night, so what’s the problem with 100 grams? I feel that someone had some problems, and so the step to disqualify was taken. She should have been given a chance to reduce the 100 grams,” Vijender told India Today. The disqualification means that Vinesh, who had earlier confirmed India’s fourth medal in Paris by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman in the semifinals, will return empty-handed. Phogat had achieved a significant victory on August 6 by ending Japan’s Yui Susaki's 82-match unbeaten streak, but her Olympic campaign was abruptly cut short.

Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata most affordable housing markets in India
interest rates have stayed steady since the end of 2023, showed Knight Frank India’s Affordability Index. Among key cities, Ahmedabad has emerged as the most affordable housing market with an Equated Monthly Instalment (EMI) to income ratio of 21% for an average household. Following closely are Pune and Kolkata, each with an EMI to income ratio of 24%. Mumbai was the only city that remained marginally higher than the threshold at 51%. “Stable affordability is essential to sustaining homebuyer demand and sales momentum, which, in turn, acts as a key economic driver for the country. As income levels rise and economic growth strengthens, end-users’ financial confidence is significantly bolstered, encouraging them to make longer-term financial commitments toward asset creation,” said Shishir Baijal, CMD, Knight Frank India.
