Does ONGC merit a big upgrade in the market? Probal Sen explains
Probal Sen, V-P-Equity Research, ICICI Securities, says there is a reasonable dividend yield in NGC and Oil Insia and the return ratio should start to show an improvement, specifically for ONGC and to a lesser extent with Oil India, despite all the strength, I think there is still some steam left in these two stories. When did you last look at ONGC so closely after decades of tracking the energy space? Does it merit the big upgrade coming in? Three of your peers in the industry have done it. Probal Sen: We have had a positive stance on ONGC over the last year. I am surprised by the extent of the reaction. To be honest, I do not think that the production guidance that the company gave was anything new compared to what they have been anyways saying for the last three quarters.

To hike or not to hike? RBI watchers on guard for shift
policy decision on Thursday even though most expect he’ll keep interest rates unchanged again. Global markets have been roiled in recent weeks by central bank action, with the Bank of England cutting interest rates last week, the Bank of Japan hiking, and the Federal Reserve preparing to ease amid recession fears. That may give the Reserve Bank of India reason to stay cautious after keeping rates steady for 18 months already. But there is a chance the RBI may signal a pivot is coming months. Thursday will be the last rate decision of the six-member monetary policy committee before its current four-year term expires in October. Some economists expect the MPC may want to go out with a bang by possibly setting the stage for policy easing.

However, Bangladesh’s economic turnaround met with mass political unrest as Hasina’s governance began appearing dictatorial and elections were seen internationally as a mere formality.

Congress raises dropping of Preamble from NCERT textbooks, Nadda says govt committed to Constitution
Opposition Congress party on Wednesday raised in Rajya Sabha the issue of dropping of Preamble to the Constitution from certain NCERT textbooks saying this was an attempt to impose communal ideology on the country — a claim which Union Minister J P Nadda countered saying the government was committed to protecting the constitution. Raising the issue, Leader of the Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Preamble, which is the soul and foundation of the Indian Constitution, used to be published in NCERT textbooks. The objectives stated by the Preamble are to secure justice, liberty, equality to all citizens and promote fraternity to maintain unity and integrity of the nation, he said and went on to read the debate in Constituent Assembly in November 1948, where it was argued that political democracy in the country should also be made a social democracy. «Political democracy cannot last unless there lies at the base of it social democracy. What does social democracy mean? It means a way of life which recognizes liberty, equality and fraternity as the principles of life,» he quoted from the debate.

Local-language web originals are still playing catch-up with Hindi
NEW DELHI : Despite rising interest and investments in non-Hindi web originals in the country, local-language shows still have a long way to go in terms of viewership, shows a recent report. B&B: Bujji and Bhairava (Telugu) and Inspector Rishi (Tamil)—the most-watched regional-language shows—clocked in a viewership of 4.9 million each, against the 28.2 million of the most-watched hindi show, Panchayat-Season 3, in the first six months of 2024, according to research conducted by media consulting firm Ormax Media. Entertainment industry experts say audiences in vernacular markets are still more lured by cinema and television, and unlike Hindi, there are no established franchises with returning seasons.

Buy and hold not working now; it pays to be nimble, says Manish Gunwani. Here’s what he is betting on
Manish Gunwani, Head-Equity, Bandhan AMC, says while they own PSUs, they do not trust any single PSU too much, because the government has a habit of changing regulations periodically. So, they have a string of pearls in select PSUs, 1-1.5% kind of holdings. Gunwani says Bandhan AMC’s bigger overweights right now are healthcare, internet, and telecom on the defensive side and real estate, power, and capex-related stocks on the cyclical side. What do you make of the construct of the market? We had a scary fall on Monday and looks like a lot of collateral damage has already been done. Manish Gunwani: I would prefer to be a bit cautious. A lot of returns are being made in cyclical sectors and tactically it is because of valuations and the Indian rupee has also outperformed a lot. Also, given the election result, the policy focus is still to be seen. So, overall, in a bull market, there are periods where one needs to be tactically cautious. We will go through some consolidation. I do not expect any big drawdown because liquidity looks fine.
