markets COST Provident Platform Boxing recommendations Interoperability of set-top boxes not feasible
interoperability is not feasible in the Indian market as the existing STBs deployed by the distribution platform operators (DPOs) are non-interoperable, and deploying new interoperable STBs will be a costly affair, say industry experts. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), in its recent recommendations to the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB), reiterated that all STBs in India must, in principle, support technical interoperability. STB interoperability is the ability to change a service provider without changing the STB. Currently, customers have to purchase a new STB every time they want to shift to a new service provider. «There are two types of interoperability: technical and commercial. Technical interoperability without commercial interoperability is not feasible because the STBs remain the property of the DPOs,» said a top official with a TV distribution company, on condition of anonymity. This is not the first time Trai has made a recommendation in favour of STB interoperability. The discussion on STB interoperability has been going on since 2010, when the regulator first floated a consultation paper on the issue. «STB interoperability is a dead horse that the regulator keeps flogging. At a time when consumers have the option of moving to internet-enabled content delivery, the regulator is talking about a legacy issue that has not been implemented to this day,» said the India head of an international content security firm.

markets Provident economy Trade show Banking funds offer attractive entry levels
Investors looking to make a broad-based thematic bet in a market that is trading at all-time highs can consider a banking fund to benefit from attractive valuations while diversifying their portfolio. Recent underperformance of the Nifty Financial Services Index, bank non-performing assets at decadal lows, lower valuations and strong growth prospects for the Indian economy, provide a good entry point, believe fund managers. Investors can make a lump sum investment and allocate 5-10% of their portfolio to such funds, fund managers say. Fund managers point out that the Nifty Financial Services Index has lagged the broader Nifty 50 index over the last three years. The Nifty Financial Services Index gained 17.19% and 43.24% in the last one and three years, respectively, underperforming the Nifty 50's gain of 25.26% and 54.19%.

FIVE WhatsApp Death Experts recommendations New criminal laws: Law Commission was bypassed, says Chidambaram
Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday claimed that the Centre bypassed the Law Commission in enacting the three new criminal laws that came into effect from July 1. The Law Commission, comprising of retired judges, legal experts, professors, and permanent legal staff, would normally hold consultations with bar council members, and advocate associations and prepare a draft to be presented in the Parliament, he said. But the Law Commission was bypassed and five or six «part-timers» were appointed for a panel, he said on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act. «The laws were not referred to the Law Commission nor was it consulted.
