Last-mile transmission a big hurdle to policy rate cut
Mumbai: What’s holding back India’s central bank from cutting policy rates? Apart from the pace of price rise that is yet to align with Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) target of 4%, there is another factor at play — transmission of past repo rate actions into lending rates. The monetary policy committee (MPC) of RBI raised the repo rate by 250 basis points (bps) between May 2022 and February 2023.

Quantum MF cries foul on ICICI Securities delisting, complains to Sebi

The asset management company, in a letter to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), also objected to employees of ICICI Bank Ltd allegedly reaching out to ICICI Securities shareholders urging them to vote in favour of the delisting, which sailed through despite opposition from some investors. ICICI Securities last month held a shareholder vote on the proposal to delist the company from the bourses and make it a 100% subsidiary of parent ICICI Bank.

Stars may have finally aligned for Elon Musk-owned satcom company in India
Starlink for a satcom licence, despite pending issues such as its ties with US security agencies. The Elon Musk-owned company may be given “conditional approval”, based on an undertaking furnished by it, said people with knowledge of the matter. “As per the undertaking, Starlink may be asked to not share with any US agency the machines or equipment used in India, while data should not be routed outside the country,” one of the persons told ET, asking not to be named. Further, the satcom company may be asked to partner with an Indian company in atime-bound manner. This comes as Musk is set to travel to India later this month and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with plans for a Tesla factory expected to be announced. An internal committee of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on the Starlink application. Since some of the issues, including those related to Starlink’s collaboration with American intelligence agencies, remain open, the company can only be granted conditional approval, the people said.

Beating India in the World Test Championship was ‘massive’: New Zealand’s Henry Nicholls
Henry Nicholls is quite positive about his chances of regaining a place in the Test side. The 32-year-old from Christchurch was dropped from the Test side for the home series against South Africa earlier this year. He was replaced by young sensation Rachin Ravindra. But he was called back for the following series against Australia and that gave Nicholls the confidence that he was still in the scheme of things for the Black Caps team management. The 56-Test veteran has been an important part of the New Zealand’s Test side since scoring a fifty in his debut match in 2016 against Australia. And he was also a member of the side that won the inaugural World Test Championship, beating India in the Final in Southampton, England, in 2021. He didn’t contribute much with the bat in that match but took a brilliant catch to dismiss dangerous Rishabh Pant in the second innings. Excerpts from his interaction with ET Sport. You were part of the New Zealand side that beat India in the World Test Championships final. How big was the occasion?

Consumption down, but Vanaspati weightage in WPI still high
wholesale price index (WPI) after palm oil, whereas sunflower and soybean oils, which are now consumed more, get a lower weightage in the WPI of 2011-12, an anomaly which may lead to erroneous data about inflation. The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) recently wrote to the Centre, urging it to correct the weightage of different oils in the WPI to reflect the present consumption pattern. The weightage of edible oils in the WPI is 2.64293% under the food articles category. It is based on the consumption and the average price.

Finally, moving out of defence colony
New Delhi's decision to post military and defence attaches to several new countries reflects India's changing assessments of strategic interests. Countering China, safeguarding critical gateways and increasing export of Indian military hardware is behind the choice of these new outposts that include several countries in Africa, East Europe and Asia Pacific. Now, GoI must ensure that defence personnel in missions abroad aren't limited to procurement, trade and training, as defence is an essential component of strategic relations. A better understanding of a defence attache's role is a must for the most optimum outcome.

Bollywood brides and brothels
Bollywood directors, one observes a pattern in the sets and the costumes. You realise that there's a conflation of royal palaces and brothels. Queens, brides and prostitutes all look alike, dress alike, live in the same spaces, dance and sing for the pleasure of men. A celebrity wedding looks no different — same sets, same costumes, the same desire for glamour. This is what relationships should look like in social media discourse — instagrammable, with friends, girlfriends, wives, mistresses, ex-lovers, secret lovers and escorts. The look matters. The same look in almost all cases. The Kama Sutra draws attention to the tension between the monogamous housewife and the polygamous courtesan. The former has access to status, power, dignity and nobility while the latter has freedom, agency and enterprise. The two belong to very different worlds. This was part of Indian culture for over 2,000 years. This system was broken down brutally by the British with the support of nationalists, who saw the courtesan culture as a sign of corruption and debauchery. In this one aspect, the nationalists and the colonialists agreed.
