SC ordered 2% slip audit in 2019 on parties' petition
Supreme Court's decision to hear a plea seeking complete count of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail paper slips in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls has brought back the focus on the Election Commission of India's rationale in limiting the verification to five randomly selected EVMs. The poll panel has defended its rationale in courts and also found support from experts such as the Indian Statistical Institute which said the random formula was statistically sound. After a petition by over 20 political parties in 2019, SC mandated physical verification of EVM-VVPAT counts in 2% polling booths per constituency. Of the 20,687 polling stations where the mandatory physical verification of VVPAT slips was conducted on SC orders in 2019, eight cases of mismatch were found, which EC said were mainly due to 'easily explainable human errors'. The mismatch estimated at 0.0004% had no impact on the results in all eight cases, EC maintained.

Audit fees growth lags corporate expansion in India
Audit fees for Nifty 500 companies increased by a modest 28% between 2018 and 2023, indicating that they have lagged behind their growth and operational performance, as market capitalisation grew 92.75%, net sales rose 83.7%, and profit after tax (PAT) increased 126.2%. According to data provided by Prime Database, audit fees grew from ₹1,114 crore in FY18 to ₹1,430 crore in FY23 for Nifty 500 companies and from ₹404 crore to ₹466 crore for Nifty 50 companies. While the audit fee hike is marginal, the sharply increasing complexity in business operations, heightened regulatory oversight on listed companies, growing complexity in reporting requirements, and escalating talent and organisation costs every year are putting auditors in a tough spot.

'An era comes to an end’ Mallikarjun Kharge writes as Manmohan Singh retires from Rajya Sabha. Full letter here
As you retire today from the Rajya Sabha after having served for more than three decades, an era comes to an end. Very few people can say they have served our nation with more dedication and more devotion than you. Very few people have accomplished as much as you for the nation and its people. Personally, it has been a privilege for me to have been a part of your cabinet. Over the last 10 years, while I have been the leader of the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, you have always been a source of wisdom and someone whose advise I valued. Over the last few years, you have made it a point to be available for the Congress party despite personal inconveniences. For this, the party and I will always remain grateful. You have shown that it is possible to pursue economic policies that were equally beneficial to large industries, young entrepreneurs, small businesses, the salaried class and the poor. It was you who showed that even the poor can participate in the nation's growth and be lifted out of poverty. Thanks to your policies, India was able to lift 27 crore people, the highest number of poor people out of poverty in the world while you were the Prime Minister. The MGNREGA scheme launched under your government continues to provide relief to the rural workers during times of crisis. The nation and particularly the rural poor will always remember you for ensuring that they can earn a living and live with self-respect through this scheme. The patriotic legacy of the Congress party and its spirit of sacrifice was ably demonstrated by you when you decided to pursue the Indo-US Nuclear Deal even if it meant putting your government at risk for the sake of the nation's security. This was a historic moment when

We need judicial system reforms to ensure swift disposal of cases
₹10,000 for the first adjournment sought by a disputant and double that sum for every subsequent one. Why do lawyers seek more than three adjournments and courts grant these in spite of the fact that it is irregular? Many lawyers, especially senior ones, have many briefs on their hands, and when conflicting timings of case hearings arise in different courts, their juniors are asked to seek fresh dates. Most often, judges oblige.

The EU’s sustainability directive may weaken trade ties
The European Council recently approved the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), a due-diligence requirement that creates a legal liability for EU-based firms arising from any environmental and human-rights violations (including labour rights) within their supply chains. The CSDDD awaits a nod from the European Parliament, which is going for elections in June. Indian exporters are still grappling with the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) that will effectively tax our carbon-intensive industries serving EU markets.

India is a country that shouldn't be missed: Sébastien Bazin, group chairman and CEO, Accor
luxury hotels of brands such as Fairmont, Raffles and Sofitel opening up in the years ahead besides hotels of other brands from Accor’s luxury and lifestyle division, said Sébastien Bazin, group chairman and CEO of the French multinational hospitality chain and Europe’s largest hotel chain in an interview with ET. Accor will open 30 hotels in India totalling about 5,500 keys in the next three to five years. The chain currently has 62 hotels in India totalling around 11,000 rooms, but that’s not enough, Bazin said. “I have been a big believer in India, but we have 2000 hotels in France and less than 100 hotels in India. Going by the size of the country, we should have well over 1000 hotels here. I know this is going to take very long but it should happen in the future and it is going to be worth it. We will need more Accor employees here across many different layers over time and we will have to give them greater decision-making powers," he added.

Congress taking support of SDPI even as blasts taking place in Bengaluru: Amit Shah
Amit Shah on Tuesday accused the Congress of taking support from the Social Democratic Party of India, the political arm of the banned Popular Front of India, «even as blasts are taking place in Bengaluru». The senior BJP leader was apparently referring to the recent blast at popular eatery Rameshwaram Cafe, which is under investigation. Shah also claimed that there has been no trace of corruption on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as against the Congress, which has allegedly stains of corruption of Rs 12 lakh crore. «On the one hand there are explosions in Bengaluru and on the other hand I got an information that SDPI has supported Congress. If it is true, then can people of Karnataka be safe under Congress?,» Shah asked during his election campaign in Channapatna in Ramanagara district, which is part of Bengaluru Rural Constituency. BJP has fielded Dr C N Manjunath, a renowned cardiologist who was the head of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology. Manjunath is the son-in-law of former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and brother-in-law of former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.
