As reported, he has now said the US would levy a 25% tariff on all imports from any country that purchases oil or gas from Venezuela, a country that has been under US sanctions but whose finances he evidently wants to squeeze harder.

India to seek tariff reprieve in meeting with US officials
bilateral trade agreement, people familiar with the matter said. Brendan Lynch, US assistant trade representative for South and Central Asia, and a team of officials will visit India from March 25-29 as part of ongoing trade discussions, the US embassy in New Delhi said in a statement Monday. Officials in New Delhi are expected to make the case for a reprieve from reciprocal tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect on April 2, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. The two sides are expected to discuss a framework for a bilateral trade deal, after which formal negotiations would start, they said. Aside from trade officials, Lynch is also likely to meet Vikram Misri, India’s foreign secretary, during the visit, one of the people said. “We look forward to productive and constructive discussions with the incoming US delegation to expand and deepen our bilateral trade and economic ties in a mutually beneficial manner,” India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

Bulls in beast mode, clean up D-Street losses
foreign selling. The rebound on the heels of a prolonged period of gloom has helped the main indices erase all their 2025 losses. The rupee advanced to 85.63, its strongest this year against the dollar, rising for the ninth day in a row. The NSE Nifty rose 307.95 points or 1.32% to close at 23,658.35. The BSE Sensex rose 1,078.87 points or 1.4% to end at 77,984.38. Both indices are up 5.1% in the six trading sessions. «Monday's upside was due to a combination of short covering, and expectations of some relaxation or less punitive tariffs which were supposed to be implemented on April 2,» said Pankaj Pandey, head of retail research at ICICI Direct.

Fleet could be flat, but the purpose is good: Air India chief Campbell Wilson
Air India Express will take delivery of several narrow-body planes during the year, allowing it to capture strong growth opportunities in the latter half of the year on domestic and short-haul international routes. «Well, our operating fleet is going to be pretty flat this year (FY26), in part because of delays to delivery, but also because we're taking aircraft out of service to do the refit, the Boeing B787s and the B777s in particular. And so, it means that we're actually not able to grow. But it's an investment for a good purpose,» said Wilson. Air India currently has a fleet of 198 planes including 70 inherited from Vistara-the erstwhile full-service joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. Separately, Air India Express operates 103 aircraft-36 Airbus and 67 Boeing-including 38 new Boeing jetliners from an October 2023 order. Nine more narrow-bodies are slated to join by this June.

Higher turnover limit notified for MSMEs; Move to enable more small cos to be eligible for sops
Similarly, small and medium enterprises are reclassified as firms with investments in plant and machinery up to ₹5 crore and ₹125 crore, and turnover of ₹100 crore and ₹500 crore, respectively. «Enhancement in MSME definition addresses the anomaly crept in due to inflation as turnovers ballooned on raw material price hikes. The move also paves the way for MSMEs to build scale and become competitive,» said Anil Bhardwaj, secretary general, Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises. The reclassification also allows more small enterprises to be eligible under the government's public procurement policy. Earlier, the enterprises exceeding the ₹50 crore turnover threshold for small enterprises couldn't avail benefit of MSE (micros and small) status.

AI to have low impact on Indian jobs: IT Secretary S Krishnan
AI) is unlikely to have as much material impact on organised-sector headcount in India as in the West, a top government official said Monday, as far fewer white-collar jobs are potentially at risk here than in the advanced industrial economies. «The reason we don't see it as much of a threat in India is possibly because we don't have as many white-collar jobs at stake, and we don't see as many office jobs at stake,» S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), told delegates at the ETTelecom 5G Congress. «Today's generative AI mostly replaces manual, repetitive work.» Rather, Krishnan said, AI's assistance can enhance workforce productivity. «The application of AI into the real segments of the economy, like manufacturing and agriculture, is really possible when there's an interplay between sensors, IoT devices communicating along 5G and 6G networks, going into a central server, collecting the data and putting it all together, so that it can work,» Krishnan said.

US bilateral trade pact round-I to focus on duty sops for goods
India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) will primarily focus on duty concessions on goods and New Delhi is hopeful of the pact bringing predictability in tariffs, regulations and investment climate, officials said on Monday. Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch is in New Delhi starting Tuesday for three days of negotiations on the proposed trade deal. His visit comes ahead of the April 2 deadline for likely imposition of reciprocal tariffs on all countries, including India, by the Trump administration. The proposed India-US trade pact is likely to be finalised in two tranches with the first phase expected to focus on issues concerning bilateral goods trade, though full clarity on the issue will emerge by the end of this week, the officials said. They added that both sides are expected to finalise the contours, schedule of negotiations, and terms of reference of the proposed BTA during Lynch's visit. The first tranche of the deal is targeted for completion by Fall of 2025. India said it is looking forward to «productive and constructive discussions» with the incoming US delegation to «expand and deepen our bilateral trade and economic ties in a mutually beneficial manner».
