India's biotechnology sector is witnessing remarkable growth, with the country's bioeconomy now valued at USD 150 billion but there is still significant untapped potential in innovation and product development, which could further elevate India's global standing in the sector, Dr Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director of the government's Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), said. BIRAC is a not-for-profit public sector enterprise set up by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the government that supports and promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and research in the sector. In an interview with PTI, Kumar highlighted India's significant contributions to global healthcare, with 40 per cent of the world's generic medicines being supplied by Indian companies. «We have enormous potential and capability, but when it comes to the value of our bioeconomy, we are ranked 14th globally. This is because much of the value stems from patented, innovative products' — an area where India still needs to improve,» Kumar said.

Indian indices rebounded from the day's lows aided by private banks to end the session in the green as they broke their three-sessions losing streak. The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 218 points, or 0.27%, to settle at 81,224, while the broader Nifty climbed 104 points, or 0.42%, to close at 24,854. Commenting on the day's action, expert Rupak De of LKP Securities said that Nifty moved up sharply after pressing a panic bottom around 24,570 when it slipped below 24,700 level. «On the hourly chart, a positive divergence is visible on the RSI (14), indicating a shift toward positive price momentum. Immediate resistance is seen at 24,900, which previously acted as support. A decisive move above 24,900 could induce a short-term rally. The trend is likely to remain strong as long as the Nifty stays above 24,750,» De said.

Natural gas pumped from below the ground and from under the seabed from sites ranging from the Arabian Sea to Bay of Bengal within India is the raw material that is turned into CNG for sale to automobiles and piped cooking gas to households. Production from legacy fields, whose price is regulated by the government and which are used to feed city gas retailers, has been falling by up to 5 per cent annually due to natural decline that has set in. This has led to supply cuts to city gas retailers, four sources in know of the matter said. While the input gas for piped cooking gas that households get is protected, the government has cut supply of raw material for CNG. Gas from legacy fields used to meet 90 per cent of the demand for CNG in May 2023 and has progressively fallen. The supply was cut to just 50.75 per cent of the CNG demand beginning October 16 from 67.74 per cent last month, they said.

The government has found success in its first phase of the `76,000 crore incentive fund under theIndia Semiconductor Mission (ISM), initiated in December 2021. In less than 36 months, five semiconductor projects have been approved for central and state government incentives. These include four chip packaging plants and one chip fabrication unit, all in various stages of construction, expected to be operational between 2025 and 2027. As the first phase of ISM concludes, experts are urging the second phase of the project which is expected to be launched soon to focus on forging partnerships with global semiconductor leaders, expanding the ecosystem for raw materials like chemicals and gases, and intensifying efforts to develop skilled talent for the growing industry.

Tech Mahindra posted a 46.8% sequential rise in net profit at Rs 1,250 crore in the fiscal second quarter propelled by a sharp focus on margins and a one-time gain from the sale of land. Profit surged 153% from a year earlier. India’s fifth largest software services company recorded a 2.4% sequential rise in revenue from operations at Rs 13,313 crore in the three months ended September. Revenue rose 3.5% year-on-year, rebounding after four straight quarters of decline. Revenue growth was led by the largest vertical of communication, as well as hi-tech and media verticals, according to the company.

IT companies—Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and LTIMindtree hired more than 17,500 employees in total in the September quarter. This marked a reversal of declining headcount trend in the over $250-billion Indian IT industry after nearly seven quarters. HCLTech was the only company from the top tier to see its workforce reduce by 780 people last quarter largely due to its divestment of a joint venture with US-based State Street. India’s IT industry had shed a record more than 70,000 employees in FY24. The first quarter of this fiscal year saw a cumulative decline of 1,750 employees.
