Kanpur weather today: Will rain play spoilsport on fourth day of India vs Bangladesh?
second Test between India and Bangladesh. The day will start with temperatures around 28°C, rising to 31°C by the afternoon, as per weather.com. There was no rain on Sunday in Kanpur, but play was abandoned without a ball being bowled on day three of the second Test. Overnight rain left the outfield too wet to allow a timely start, forcing both teams and the fans to endure a long wait. As for today's game at the Green Park Stadium, conditions will be overcast through the morning, with a slight chance of showers around 1:30 PM, where rainfall probability peaks at 32%.

IXP companies hiking investments amid data centre boom
Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and peering networks are set to surge in India amid the data centre boom to support increasing IT workloads and strong data consumption by mobile users. IXPs, typically, are physical locations where different networks connect to exchange internet traffic via common switching infrastructure. They are responsible for interconnecting internet service providers (ISPs), content delivery networks (CDNs) such as Cloudfare, Akamai, over-the-top (OTT) players such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, DNS root servers, national and international telco networks and even social media networks like Instagram. As per the Internet Society, India ranks number 2 in Asia on the IXP count metric. But it lags in penetration terms compared to Finland, Singapore, Australia and the UK. For instance, Finland and Singapore have 12.5 and 22 IXPs per 10 million people, respectively, whereas India has only 0.23 IXPs per 10 million people, according to Extreme Infocom.

Banks look for a way out of UBO tangle
ownership rules that differ from nation to nation. Banks handling foreign direct investments (FDI) into local companies and overseas direct investments (ODI) by Indian investors venturing abroad, vet the last natural persons behind the larger shareholders of the investing entities. But, in several cases they are unable to peel off the layers to spot the real persons at the peak of what could be a multi-layered investment structure — primarily due to less demanding disclosure requirements in several jurisdictions.

Consumers keep a strict watch on credit card spends
Indian banks expect growth in festive period spending through credit cards to be in high single-digits as consumer demand remains subdued, several card issuers and merchants said. «Right now, it's not like the mood is bullish for a big festive season, it seems like wait and watch,» said Sanjeev Moghe, head-cards & payments, Axis Bank. «It's a different market when the economy is growing at 12-15% and it's not growing at that pace. In my own discussion with merchants, I am not sensing a bullish mood. But we are hoping that consumers could positively surprise us.» For the festive period of October to December 2023, banks had recorded credit card spends of nearly ₹4.87 lakh crore. During the October to December 2022 period, banks saw total spends of ₹3.69 lakh crore. In one year, banks had seen growth in credit card spending of over 30%.

Hybrid car sales surge amid global policy push
Policy push by various countries and stricter emission norms are fuelling electric vehicle sales every year across key global markets, shows data from the International Energy Agency. However, penetration of hybrids (including strong hybrids and plug-in hybrids), driven purely by consumer choice, are climbing up at a faster pace. Since 2021, hybrid vehicle sales have been rising steadily in China, Japan, Korea, UK, France, and US, underscoring growing consumer preference for this technology, shows data collated by Nomura Research Institute. China leads the trend with a nearly fourfold surge in hybrid penetration levels to 19.9% in the first half of 2024 from 5.3% in 2021. Korea too has seen a big jump — to 25.2% from 11.8% in the same period. Other markets have shown a similar growth trajectory.

Lavasa creditors set eligibility floor to begin resolution 2.0
Lavasa Corp, which was once touted as India's first private hill town project, have set an eligibility criteria of ₹100 crore net worth and a ₹25 lakh refundable deposit for new expressions of interest (EOIs) from prospective bidders as they try to find a buyer for a second time after junking the previous attempt earlier this year. The minutes of the meeting of the committee of creditors (CoC) held on September 17 show that 77% of lenders led by Union Bank of India (UBI) have agreed to a minimum criteria for bidders which is a change from the last time the process ran without any eligible criteria to «maximise participation» of applicants. «Besides this eligibility criteria, lenders also want to make certain changes with most likely a new resolution professional (RP) in place of Shailesh Verma and a process advisor to make way in place of Deloitte as both have been in charge for long and has presided over a what has been a failed process prior to this,» said a person aware of the matter. A joint lenders forum (JLF) called by UBI is expected to finalise timelines and appointment of a new RP as early as next week as lenders pick up the pieces after many twists and turns in the case.

PM Modi urges people to buy 'Made in India' products during festive season
Made in India' products during the forthcoming festive season that will last nearly two months and includes Navratra, Dussehra, Diwali, Chhat and other occasions where cheap articles made in China have been flooding the market in the last few years. In his monthly 'Mann ki Baat' address, the PM said, «Friends, in this festive season you can once again reiterate your old resolves. Anything you buy, should necessarily be 'Made in India'… Anything you gift, that too should be 'Made In India'. Merely buying earthen lamps is not 'Vocal for Local'. You should promote local products made in your area more and more. Any such product, that has been made with the sweat of an Indian artisan, that is made on Indian soil, is our pride — we always have to lend glory to this pride.» His remarks come against the backdrop of China-made idols of gods, decorative lights and other products which come at a low cost but eat into the market of indigenous products. Modi also referred to the completion of a decade of the 'Make in India' initiative where all segments, from big industries to small shopkeepers have made a contribution to its success.

IPL franchises' pay packets get bigger and heavier
Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) has increased the total salary cap for the 2025 season by 33% year-on-year to ₹146 crore, up from ₹110 crore in the 2024 season. The salary cap will rise further to ₹151 crore and ₹157 crore for the 2026 and 2027 IPL seasons, respectively. The auction purse for the franchises has been set at ₹120 crore for IPL 2025. These decisions were made at an IPL Governing Council meeting held in Bengaluru on Saturday, where the Player Regulations for 2025-2027 were finalised. The IPL GC's decision followed a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises in July at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters.

Government bond yields likely to soften further by end of the fiscal
Government bond yields are likely to soften further by the end of the fiscal, leading to an annualised savings of Rs 1,000-2,000 crore for the exchequer. Higher demand, especially from foreign portfolio investors, would help yields remain tamed, economists said, pointing to North Block’s second-half borrowing calendar published last week. The Centre’s gross borrowings for the second half of the fiscal have been fixed at Rs 6.61 lakh crore with the borrowing target for the entire fiscal being maintained at Rs 14.01 lakh crore, the central bank said last week. About 77% of the bond issuances will be for 10 years or higher tenure. «Given the favourable global and domestic backdrop, we expect a further downward bias in domestic yields, leading to a steepening bias in the yield curve,» Bank of Baroda economist Aditi Gupta said.
