UK visa ban for Indians? Top Tory contender Robert Jenrick says ‘no Indian visas without return agreement’
Robert Jenrick, one of the four remaining candidates to replace Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative Party, has vowed to «severely restrict visas» to countries that refuse to accept the return of illegal migrants, particularly targeting India and Vietnam. He claimed that while 250,000 visas were granted to Indian nationals in 2023 for work, visits, and study, an estimated 100,000 Indians currently reside illegally in the UK, and “returns remain stuck in the hundreds.”

BJP doesn't know how to do politics without lying, cheating, says Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 28 (ANI): National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the party «doesn't know how to do politics without lying or cheating.» Speaking to the media while campaigning for the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls on Friday, the candidate from the Budgam and Ganderbal constituencies said that the BJP had done nothing for the past 10 years for the union territory and alleged that they are trying to cheat people into voting them for them either in the name of religion, terror, or familism. «The BJP doesn't know how to do politics without lying and cheating. They have nothing to say about the last 10 years; therefore, they are trying to cheat people. In the name of either religion, terror, or familism. They are doing all this because they haven't done anything for Jammu and Kashmir,» he said.

'Black Market' Coldplay Concert Tickets: BookMyShow CEO pulled up by Mumbai Police over ticket scalping claims
Mumbai Police has called in the CEO and technical head of BookMyShow's parent company to probe allegations of black-market ticket sales for the upcoming Coldplay concerts in Mumbai. CEO Ashish Hemrajani of Big Tree Entertainment Private Limited and the technical head are to appear before the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Saturday. The summons follows a complaint by advocate Amit Vyas, who alleged that tickets for the Coldplay concerts, scheduled for January 18, 19, and 21, were being resold at excessive prices shortly after their official release on September 22. Tickets, originally priced at Rs 2,500, were reportedly being resold for up to Rs 3 lakh. All tickets for the initial shows sold out quickly, prompting Coldplay to add a third show on January 21, which also sold out. BookMyShow, the authorized ticketing partner for the concerts, stated that unauthorized reselling and scalping are illegal and punishable by law in India.

Hardeep Singh Puri calls to build consensus over bringing petrol, diesel under GST
Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday called to build consensus over bringing petrol, diesel under the Goods and Services Tax. While delivering a lecture on «Strategy and Measures for Enhancing India's Energy Security in the Coming Decade» at the Pune International Centre's (PIC) 14th Foundation Day lecture, he said, «I have heard a suggestion to bring petrol and diesel under GST, now petrol and diesel under GST is something that I have been advocating for a long period of time. Now I am very sure that my senior colleague, the finance minister, has also spoken about bringing fuel under GST on several occasions.» To enhance its energy security, India needs to focus on strategic petroleum reserves and prioritise exploration and production to reduce its heavy reliance on imported fuel.

Mumbai: A surge of more than 50% in steel imports in FY25 has sent the alloy's prices crashing in India, setting off alarm bells for domestic manufacturers, even as they battle slowing local demand and march ahead with planned capacity expansion. According to data from market intelligence firm BigMint, prices of benchmark hot-rolled coils (HRC) of steel averaged ₹48,350 per tonne in September (from ₹57,900 in September 2023), falling below the ₹50,000-mark for the first time since November 2020, when sales hit rock bottom in the thick of the pandemic.

India's CCTV crack down could impact Chinese players
Chinese vendors from the supply chains of all forms of surveillance equipment in the aftermath of the recent coordinated pager explosions in Lebanon, multiple sources aware of the development told ET. The move is set to benefit local companies. «In light of the pager explosions, critical sourcing of certain components or parts of the supply chain will be looked at in a big way by the government,» one top industry source cited above told ET. «The government's policy on surveillance cameras is likely to come into effect on October 8. Once it comes out, all the Chinese players will be out of the picture, and Indian companies are likely to gain.» While the gazette notifications came out in March and April this year, sources said the government has accelerated its implementation and sharpened its focus on security after the Lebanon explosions. The government is set to fast-track the implementation of guidelines on CCTV cameras, which will allow players from «trusted locations» to sell in India.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu claims didn’t pursue India Out campaign; refers to military presence
Mohamed Muizzu claimed that he had not followed an ‘India Out’ policy, while asserting that the country had a “serious problem” with the presence of foreign military on its soil. Male is in talks with New Delhi for a proposed state visit by Muizzu in October. Maldives is seeking support from India to tackle a simmering financial crisis. “We have never been against any one country at any point. It’s not India Out. Unilever ready to defend India top spot with millions
Unilever will do «whatever it takes» to defend its market leadership in India and won't hesitate to invest «hundreds of millions» or make acquisitions as competition intensifies on several fronts-from regional rivals to new-age, digital-first brands. «We have established positions that we believe are very, very strong. We have an unblinking commitment to defend India,» Unilever chief financial officer Fernando Fernandez told investors at the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference on Wednesday. «So, I will not blink before putting in hundreds of millions to defend a position in India if it has to be defended. We know investors would reward us because we defend positions, whatever it takes.» The dominance over most home and personal care categories by Hindustan Unilever (HUL), the local unit of the Anglo-Dutch consumer giant, has been coming under threat.

Glue in and cash in as India’s top two two-wheeler makers Hero and Honda battle it out this festive season
festive season will be crucial for India's top two two-wheeler makers as the duo, accounting for more than half of the market, plan to intensify their slugfest and go all out to chase volumes and market share with aggressive promotional schemes in the world's largest market. Hero MotoCorp aims to retail 1.5 million two-wheelers, up 10% year-on-year (YoY) during the 32-day period which begins with Navratri on 3 October. This is equivalent to nearly three months of sales. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) plans to sell 15-20% more than in 2023 — a year that was marked by supply shortages. To be sure, the priorities for each are different but the goalposts remain the same. For Honda, which overtook Hero in wholesale volumes in the first five months of this fiscal, it would be about covering more ground and cementing its leadership position; for Hero, it would be about clawing back market share it ceded reclaiming the numero uno position.

On hearing about the recent death of media magnate Nari Hira, I was reminded of the first time I heard that name as a child (briefly thinking it designated a company rather than a person) and of the wave of “video films" that Hira produced in the mid-to-late 1980s. These were quickly made, visually unambitious movies of varying quality that were shot, edited and distributed on video, and heavily promoted in his magazines like Stardust and Society.

Turkish President Erdogan skips mention of Kashmir at UN, focuses on Gaza
Erdogan did not mention Kashmir in his address at the United Nations General Assembly this year, the first time he has skipped the issue since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The focus of his 35-minute speech on Tuesday was on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 40,000 people have died in Israeli attacks against Hamas. After India scrapped the special status Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed under the Constitution in 2019, Erdogan has referred to Kashmir every year in his address to world leaders at the UNGA session here, while advocating talks between New Delhi and Islamabad. However, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry insisted that Turkiye's stance on the Kashmir issue remains unchanged, The Dawn newspaper reported.
