Developing countries’ food subsidies are protected by an interim peace clause which shields food procurement programmes against action from WTO members in case the subsidy ceilings—10% of value of food production in the case of India and other developing countries—are breached.

Addressing EAS meeting earlier, Jaishankar in an indirect message to China emphasised that the body must be committed to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific, with respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said India firmly supported the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and its implementation through EAS. «There is great synergy between the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative proposed by India and AOIP. Quad will always complement Asean and Asean-led mechanisms. AOIP contributes to the vision of the Quad,» Jaishankar said. «India affirms Asean centrality in the Indo-Pacific and advocates the strengthening of EAS.» The statement can be seen as an attempt to assuage Asean misgivings over Quad, a grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday urged the members of the ASEAN Regional Forum to adopt a «uniform, unified and zero-tolerance» approach on the issue of terrorism, including dismantling the sanctuaries and financing networks. Addressing the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting here in the capital of Indonesia, he underlined that India was responding to global challenges by promoting global cooperation and delegitimisation to counter-terrorism. «On terrorism, emphasised that ARF members must adopt a uniform, unified and zero-tolerance approach.

India’s palm oil imports jumped 56% to a three-month high in June, as buyers took advantage of a dip in prices to increase purchases, a leading trade body said on Friday. Imports rose to 683,133 metric tons in June, up from 439,173 metric tons in May as prices fell to their lowest in 28 months, the Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) said in a statement.
