Multichain wallet Exodus has released its financial results for the second quarter of 2023, disclosing revenue of $12.4 million, a 4% decrease year-over-year. Net income amounted to $1.9 million.

On July 14, developers of the $1.5-billion Chinese cross-chain protocol Multichain confirmed users’ worst fears. The protocol’s CEO, identified only as “Zhaojun He,” was arrested by Chinese authorities in Kunming on May 21 after months of repeated denials on official communication channels. Also allegedly arrested was Multichain’s core team, which was operating in Shanghai. 

SpiritSwap, a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on smart contract platform Fantom, will wind down operations from Sept. 1, citing exposure to troubled Chinese cross-chain protocol Multichain.

According to data from DefiLlama, Fantom's total value locked (TVL) dropped from over $364 million in early May to about $70 million on July 14. At its peak in 2022, Fantom's TVL topped $7.5 billion. The price of its native coin Fantom (FTM) declined from $0.41 to $0.28 over the same period.

In a series of unfortunate events, the Multichain protocol, a cross-chain router protocol, has been left in a state of uncertainty following the arrest of its CEO, Zhaojun, on May 21, 2023. The arrest led to a series of operational disruptions, including the revocation of operational access keys to the Multichain's MPC node servers, which were under Zhaojun's personal control.

Multichain, a crypto project that connects different blockchains, said it's shutting down after learning that its founder was taken away by Chinese police. In a Twitter post on Friday, Multichain provided details around the sudden disappearance of its founder and chief executive, identified only by the name Zhaojun, in late May. Multichain is a so-called crypto bridge, which allows users to swap digital tokens across the various blockchains they run on. Speculation around Zhaojun's whereabouts has been swirling since his disappearance, fueled by Multichain's announcement on July 7 that it had seen an unexpected outflow of assets of more than $120 million. After that, Zhaojun's sister transferred remaining user assets to wallets she controlled before she was taken into custody as well, Multichain said on Friday.

Lending protocol Geist Finance is shutting down permanently due to losses from the Multichain exploit, according to a July 14 social media post from the app’s development team. Geist contracts were paused on July 6, then resumed in “withdraw and repay only” mode on July 9. The latest post confirms the team does not plan to reopen lending and borrowing on Geist.

Cross-chain protocol Multichain has announced that it is “forced to cease operations” due to a lack of operational funds. The announcement follows a report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis saying that withdrawals appear to be a “rug pull” by insiders. 

A person is using the Multichain Executor to drain tokens associated with the AnySwap bridging protocol, according to a July 10 report from on-chain sleuth and Twitter user Spreek. The report follows outflows of over $100 million from Multichain bridges that occurred on July 7, which were reported by the Multichain team as “abnormal.”
