Anxiety over next phase of Israel-Iran escalation: Potential implications on energy, fertiliser prices, shipping, even US prez polls
fertiliser prices, shipping through the Straits of Hormuz in addition to the current disruptions in the Red Sea, the peace and tranquillity in the Gulf and West Asia, and even the US presidential elections. The conflict has seen a step-bystep escalation, starting with the Hamas attack of October 7 last year. Israel, in response, has continued with its air and ground operations in Gaza. More than 40,000 have died from this action, nearly two million displaced and property and infrastructure severely damaged. The population there is suffering from food shortages and break down of health care. Intense multi-country efforts for ceasefire, led by the US, Egypt and Qatar, have floundered, buffeted by Israeli desire for a permanent end or irreplaceable degradation of Hamas military and governance structures, and countervailing Hamas’ demands for the ceasefire to be ‘permanent’. Around 100 Israelis remain hostages since October 7with no clarity on how many may still be alive. Anger against Israel and criticism of its actions in many countries has only grown.

Escalating tensions, fasten your seatbelts
Joe Biden said the US would not support disproportionate Israeli retaliation against Iran's missile attacks. Separately, US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell indicated subsequent interest rate cuts would not be as steep as the half-a-percentage-point initial drop. The US is not only keeping capital markets reasonably calm through its geopolitical stand and monetary policy, but it has also capped a spike in oil prices by adding impressive inventory.

Israel calls for more evacuations from south Lebanon; 9 dead in Beirut strike
southern Lebanon that are north of a UN-declared buffer zone, signaling that it may widen a ground operation launched earlier this week against the Hezbollah militant group. Israel has told people to leave Nabatieh, a provincial capital, and other communities north of the Litani River, which formed the northern edge of the border zone established by the UN Security Council after the 2006 war in a resolution that both sides accuse the other of violating. At least eight Israeli soldiers have been killed in clashes with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, where Israel announced the start of what it says is a limited ground incursion earlier this week. The region was meanwhile bracing for Israeli retaliation following an Iranian ballistic missile attack.

BoE's Andrew Bailey warns of market stability risk from escalating Middle East conflict
Speaking to The Guardian, governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey said the BoE is watching the escalating conflict in the Middle East «extremely closely» but admitted that while the bank will pull out the stops to keep the market stable things could get «really bad». Following the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon and Iran's retaliatory missile attack this week, oil prices increased by 3% in response to concerns the conflict could obstruct crude oil flows from the Middle East. Israel's secret weapon against Iran can be a deadly option
Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel, it warned Iran of consequences with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that Iran would «pay for the attack». Some analysts said Israel's response would likely be sharper this time, suggesting it could target Iran's nuclear or oil facilities. The US, meanwhile, is pushing for a measured Israeli response to avoid a broader regional war, but its influence may be limited in shaping Israel's next steps. This latest round of hostilities threatens to expand far beyond the Israel-Palestine struggle, pulling in regional powers like Iran, and sparking fears of a full-scale war across the Middle East. US President Joe Biden has said that he would not support an attack by Israel on Iranian nuclear sites in retaliation for Tehran's firing of missiles at Israeli cities. «The answer is no,» Biden said on Wednesday, when asked if he would support such retaliation after Iran fired missiles at Israel.

“Bro... bro... bro... it’s falling:" Missile strikes in Israel spark fear among Indian expats
Iran-Israel conflict escalates, according to TOI. The rising tensions, fueled by Iran's missile attacks on Tel Aviv and other cities on Wednesday, have left many Indian workers and students deeply anxious. “The situation is tough… We’ve never faced anything as threatening as this,” shared Rajesh Medicherla, a caregiver from Telangana working in Tel Aviv. Medicherla recorded a video showing a missile striking a building in the city, and in the footage, he can be heard exclaiming in Telugu, “bro… bro… padutundi (brother, it’s falling)!” He added that no one expected the missiles to reach as far as Tel Aviv. The attacks have left many Indian nationals, including students and workers, deeply unsettled. Although most remain safe for now, there is a growing sense of alarm as the situation could worsen at any moment. Several research scholars from Bengal, who are currently in Israel, are anxious to return to India but are facing obstacles. With most international flights grounded, their attempts to return home are being thwarted. Many are awaiting instructions from India’s Ministry of External Affairs regarding possible evacuations.

Air travellers from Gulf to India face pricier, longer journeys amid Middle East conflict
geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Several Gulf carriers have altered their routes to prioritise passenger safety, while neighbouring countries in the region have closed their airspace, forcing airlines to navigate alternative routes to avoid the escalating conflict. The Indian government on Wednesday issued a travel advisory urging its nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Iran. “We are closely monitoring the recent escalation in security situation in the region. Those currently residing in Iran are requested to remain vigilant and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran,” read the advisory.
