Hollywood actors secure safeguards around AI use on screen
Actors secured these new safeguards as part of a deal announced late on Wednesday, according to Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for the SAG-AFTRA actors union. Under the three-year contract, actors «have this right of consent, and the right to fair compensation anytime some sort of digital replica or replacement of them is used,» Crabtree-Ireland told Reuters. The proposed agreement sets a minimum compensation level for AI uses, Crabtree-Ireland said. Actors also are free to negotiate higher payments.

Apple risks losing $14 billion in tax at top EU court
Apple, an adviser to Europe's top court on Thursday said an European Union (EU) tribunal made legal errors when it ruled in favour of the iPhone maker over a $14 billion tax order. The adviser also said the case should be reviewed again. In 2016, the European Commission had said that Apple benefited from two Irish tax rulings for more than two decades that artificially reduced its tax burden to as low as 0.005% in 2014.

What a Serbian cave tells you about the weather 2,500 years ago
weather depends partly on what the northern polar jet stream is up to. Jet streams are powerful and persistent winds that snake around the Earth from west to east, several miles above the surface. The meanderings of the northern polar jet stream can bring cold air down from the Arctic over the American Midwest, or send waves of Atlantic storms crashing into Ireland or Scandinavia.

Ireland waives off English test requirement for foreign nurses
Ireland has taken a big step to ease the immigration process for nurses, a critical job in the country. In response to a substantial visa backlog, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland has announced a «one-off» extension of the validity of English tests for these nurses, extending the period for three months. This decision was prompted by the challenging situation faced by nearly 1,000 nurses from abroad. They were at risk of their completed English tests expiring before they could secure their visas to practice in Ireland. Think you check all the immigration boxes? Find out Nurses moving to Ireland for work in thehealthcare system from foreign countries are required to submit a completed English test as part of their visa application, in line with the standard practice in the country. This problem had previously emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic due to travel restrictions, which prevented applicants from traveling to Ireland to renew their tests or take necessary actions, leading to test expiration issues. “On recognition of the delays caused beyond the control of the applicants, NMBI decided to offer a once-off extension to nurses and midwives impacted by visa delays,” an NMBI spokesperson told The PIE. The delays in visa processing also led to visa rejections from the Department of Justice for some nurses, compounding the problem. The NMBI is currently working to process the existing backlog of applications that arose due to these visa delays attributed to issues within the Department of Justice, as stated by their spokesperson.

Euro finds footing on hawkish policy remarks, lower energy prices
euro was near a 15-year high on the yen and was firm against the dollar on Thursday, following hawkish remarks from European policymakers and the prospect of falling energy prices. At $1.0703 the common currency withstood a rising greenback after the European Central Bank's chief economist said he had not seen enough progress in taming inflation. Overnight, the euro touched its highest since 2008 at 161.73 yen, having broken out since the Bank of Japan left short-term rates on hold last week as investors see the pair as safer than navigating the risk of an intervention in dollar/yen. The euro is also up 0.5% this week to 87.14 pence. Ireland's central bank chief Gabriel Makhlouf said on Wednesday further interest rate hikes should not be excluded, something markets do not expect at all, while Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel said the «late mile» to the inflation target may be the toughest. «While the market has been focusing on the prospects of rate cuts from (G10 central banks) next year, many of the respective central bankers have been pushing back against this speculation,» said Rabobank senior strategist Jane Foley. «As long as inflation remains above target, policy makers are likely to want to keep alive the risk of further tightening particularly since a significant drop in market rates could worsen inflationary risks.» The unloved yen failed to get much of a boost from a fall in U.S.
