Ireland fines Meta €91 million over EU data breach
Meta 91 million euros ($102 million) for password-security breaches. The Data Protection Commission criticised Meta for failing to put in place appropriate security measures to protect users' password data and for taking too long to alert the regulator over the issue. An inquiry was launched in April 2019 after Meta Ireland informed the regulator that it had «inadvertently stored certain passwords of social media users» in a readable format on its internal system, the DPC said in a statement.

Accenture Q4 profit up 22%, GenAI bookings at $1 billion
technology services player Accenture on Thursday reported a 22.6% year-on-year (YoY) rise in net profit at $1.68 billion for the fourth quarter ending August 2024. This compares with $1.37 billion profit in June-August quarter 2023. The profit grew on the back of healthy growth in North America and health & public services segment aided by robust new bookings, especially generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) deals. The Nasdaq-listed IT major hiked its annual revenue growth forecast to 3-6% for 2025, including 2-3% from mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This is on the back of improvement in the macroeconomic environment and the US Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cut of 0.5%. Accenture follows a September-August financial year. The Accenture forecast is an important indicator of the performance of key Indian IT companies as they start reporting their quarter earnings starting from Tata Consultancy Services in early October.

World wide web of schools for our young: Indian students' dream to study abroad remains a steady one
Indian students are intent on adding that foreign education experience on their CV. As Canada, Britain and Australia set conditions and caps for foreign students, Indians are looking elsewhere. Barring the US, which continues to dominate the destination wishlist, students are now opting to study in countries that were previously not on their list for reasons such as language barrier, strict work-study norms and higher financial requirements. As some of the traditional favourite education destinations limit entry, others, particularly non-English-speaking countries, are improving the 'ease of onboarding international students'.
