This accomplishment places India among a select group of elite teams worldwide that have ever reached this milestone. In the 147-year history of Test cricket, only seven teams have recorded more wins than losses at some point, and currently, only five maintain this record.
As it stands, India's Test statistics are: Matches: 580 | Wins: 179 | Losses: 178 | Draws: 222 | Ties: 1. Alongside India, the other teams with more wins than losses include Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan. Australia leads with 414 wins and 232 losses, followed by England with 397 wins against 325 losses. South Africa boasts 179 wins to 161 losses, while Pakistan has 148 wins compared to 144 losses.
Despite this achievement, India took the longest to reach this unique record, playing 580 matches—making them the slowest among the seven teams that have accomplished it at least once. In contrast, Australia reached this milestone much quicker, achieving it after winning the first-ever Test match against England in 1877.
Notably, two teams—Afghanistan and West Indies—have at one point had more wins than losses in their Test history. Meanwhile, five Test-playing nations still seek to achieve a winning record: New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, and Ireland. Their journeys in Test cricket continue as they aim to join the ranks of teams with more wins than losses.
