Suspected Houthi attacks target a ship in Gulf of Aden and Israeli port city of Eilat
Yemen's Houthi rebels early Wednesday targeted a ship in the Gulf of Aden and the southern Israeli port city of Eilat, authorities said. The attacks follow the departure of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower after an eight-month deployment in which the aircraft carrier led the American response to the Houthi assaults. Those attacks have reduced shipping drastically through the route crucial to Asian, Middle East and European markets in a campaign the Houthis say will continue as long as the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip rages. The ship attack happened off the coast of Aden, the British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said.

Israel’s army must start drafting ultra-orthodox, high court rules
TEL AVIV—Israel’s military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish students, the country’s Supreme Court ruled Tuesday, in a decision likely to put pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition as Israel fights its war in Gaza. A unanimous panel of judges ruled that there is no legal basis for exempting ultra-Orthodox religious scholars after a series of laws and government decisions carving out service exemptions were either struck down by the court or expired.

Drone-sinking of coal ship takes Red Sea perils to new level
Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint to a new level and is driving a fresh surge in insurance costs. The British navy said Tuesday that the only visible objects in the last known location of the Tutor dry-bulk carrier — at which point it was semi submerged — were some debris and an oil slick. Yemen’s Houthi militants managed to strike it with a seaborne drone, killing one crew member and injuring others. They said they eventually sank it with explosives. Israel defence chief to discuss Gaza, Lebanon on U.S. trip
Washington on Sunday to discuss the next phase of the Gaza war and escalating hostilities on the border with Lebanon, where exchanges of fire with Hezbollah have stoked fears of wider conflict. Iran-backed Hezbollah began attacking Israel shortly after Hamas' Oct. 7 assault sparked the war in Gaza, and the sides have been trading blows in the months since then. Hezbollah has said it will not stop until there is a ceasefire in Gaza. «We are prepared for any action that may be required in Gaza, Lebanon, and in more areas,» Gallant said in a statement before setting off to Washington, where he said he would meet his counterpart Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Netanyahu again claims the US is withholding arms shipments, days after Washington denies it
Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday that there had been a «dramatic drop» in U.S. weapons deliveries for Israel's war effort in Gaza, doubling down on a claim that the Biden administration has denied and underscoring the growing strains between the two allies. Netanyahu told his Cabinet that the drop had occurred four months ago, without specifying which weapons, saying only that «certain items arrived sporadically but the munitions at large remained behind.» The spat highlights how high tensions have surged between Israel and Washington over the war in Gaza, particularly surrounding the Israeli military's conduct in the beleaguered territory and the harm to civilian life there. President Joe Biden has delayed delivering certain heavy bombs since May over those concerns, but his administration fought back last week against Netanyahu's charges that other shipments had also been affected.

The Palestinian Civil Defense, an emergency group active in Gaza, said its emergency workers were digging for survivors at the site of a strike in the Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City and that it had pulled several dozen bodies from a building hit by an Israeli strike in an eastern neighborhood of Gaza City. Israel said Saturday that its fighter jets struck two Hamas military sites in the Gaza City area but did not elaborate further.

Fending off Houthis requires double the fleet, EU force says
Red Sea needs to more than double in size because of escalating attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the head of the operation said. Four EU vessels have been patrolling the waters off the coast of Yemen since February. In that time, they’ve provided “close assistance” to 164 ships, shot down more than a dozen unmanned aerial vehicles and destroyed four anti-ship ballistics missiles, Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis said in an interview on Wednesday. The Yemen-based Houthis began attacking vessels last year to pressure Israel and its allies over the war in the Gaza Strip. Their campaign has roiled global shipping, forcing many vessels to sail thousands of miles around southern Africa instead — despite the EU operation and US and UK bombing that began in January.

IMEE-EC's India-UAE segment on track: Ports' digital integration moves forward, set to be ready in 100 days
India-UAE leg of the strategic India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEE-EC) is set to begin, with a digital platform for information exchange between the two countries' ports expected to be operational within the first 100 days of the Modi government, according to The Times of India. Despite tensions in West Asia affecting the project, the G7 recently expressed strong support for the ambitious multi-country initiative. The India-UAE sea corridor is divided into five phases, with the second phase focusing on customs connectivity and the third on regulatory agencies. The IMEE-EC aims to facilitate the seamless movement of cargo from locations like Hajipur in Bihar to Haifa in Israel, requiring common port and customs documentation across countries, as well as standardized equipment and containers in all ports and dry docks.
