French Jews consider unthinkable: Voting for a party with an antisemitic past
PARIS—Serge Klarsfeld is a world-renowned Nazi hunter, a historian of the Holocaust and a moral authority in France who has pushed the country to reckon with its dark history of antisemitism. That is why many in France were shocked this week when Klarsfeld defended the far-right party of Marine Le Pen, which counts among its founders a former Nazi paramilitary soldier.

Singapore port logjam lingers as container ships keep piling in
shipping sector, spelling trouble for businesses in the city-state. The bunching up of container vessels outside one of the world’s busiest maritime trade hubs — caused by ships avoiding the Red Sea due to Houthi rebels’ attacks — means there’s more cargoes trapped in shipyards for longer. That’s pushing freight rates ever higher, with no immediate end to the congestion in sight. For the manufacturers and exporters needing to get their finished products out of the city-state, that means there may be little choice other than to hold on to their inventories longer than they’d like to.

Why are India's richie rich choosing Dubai to migrate?
rich plan to migrate to another country, most of them choose the United Arab Emirates and particularly Dubai, which is one of the Emirates. A report by Henley & Partners, an international investment migration advisory firm, says approximately 4,300 millionaires are projected to leave India this year. And most of them are headed to the UAE. However, it's not that India's rich are in a hurry to leave the country. It's only a small number of rich Indians. «India continues to lose large numbers of millionaires, especially to the UAE. However, in our view these outflows are not particularly concerning as India continues to produce far more new HNWIs than it loses to emigration. Furthermore, the bulk of the millionaires who leave India tend to retain business interests and second homes in the country, which is a positive sign,» says the report. Why the UAE has such a pull for rich Indians The UAE is a bigger attraction for India's rich than other popular destinations for migration, such as Australia, Singapore, Israel, Switzerland, the US, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Cold War 2: Do not let it spark off a nuclear arms race
The deadly stockpiles of nuclear weapons built by Cold War adversaries Russia and the US gave the ‘MAD’ doctrine of ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’ a literal ring. With thousands of nukes each, both had enough to destroy the planet many times over. Could today’s geopolitical divide between a China-led bloc and the US-led West imperil the world with another arms race being pushed beyond the limits of reason by its force of rivalry? According to the latest report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a think-tank, all nine nuclear-armed countries—the US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel—modernized their arsenals in 2023, while some deployed new weapon systems.

US wants to avoid greater war along Lebanon-Israel border: Special envoy to Joe Biden
Hezbollah movement, US envoy Amos Hochstein said on Tuesday, following an escalation in cross-border fire between the foes along Lebanon's southern frontier. Iran-backed Hezbollah has been trading fire with Israel for the last eight months in parallel with the Gaza war. Last week, the group fired the largest volleys of rockets and drones of the hostilities so far at Israeli military sites, after an Israeli strike killed the most senior commander yet. Hochstein, special envoy to US President Joe Biden, said he had been dispatched to Lebanon immediately following a brief trip to Israel because the situation was serious. «We have seen an escalation over the last few weeks. And what President Biden wants to do is avoid a further escalation to a greater war,» Hochstein said on Tuesday.

Congressional leaders allow arms sale to Israel after White House pressure
Two top Democratic leaders in Congress have unblocked the sale of 50 F-15 jet fighters to Israel, paving the way for a major weapons deal that had been held up over concerns about the killing of thousands of civilians in the war in Gaza. The $18 billion sale is one of the largest arms deals with Israel in recent years, and comes as President Biden is facing calls from leaders in his own party to withhold American weapons in order to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept an end to the Gaza war.

9 nuclear-armed nations including India continued to modernise N-arsenals in 2023: SIPRI
nuclear-armed nations including the US, Russia, France, China, India and Pakistan, continued to modernise their nuclear arsenals and several of them deployed new nuclear-capable weapon systems in 2023, a Swedish think-tank said on Monday. In its analysis, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said China's nuclear arsenal increased from 410 warheads in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024, and it is expected to keep growing. The report said some 2,100 of the deployed warheads were kept in a state of high operational alert on ballistic missiles, and nearly all of them belonged to Russia or the US. However, for the first time China is believed to have some warheads on high operational alert, it said.
