The harder, the better: Why Indians have a distaste for soft-boiled eggs
soft-boiled egg, the ball is raised to the other end of the rod and released. It hits the mould with a force of 0.6867 Newtons, just enough to crack the eggshell so the top comes off cleanly and the contents can be dug out and eaten. Germans aren’t alone in their love for soft-boiled eggs; Singapore’s kopitiam (coffee-shop) style eggs are served with a dash of soy sauce and pepper. France has many recipes structured around oeufs mollets, most notably one which suspends them in savoury jelly. Scotch eggs envelop them with minced meat. Japanese ramen includes a soft-boiled egg whose creaminess subtly helps enrich the broth. Indians eat eggs scrambled with onions, tomatoes and coriander, or stir-fried with kheema. We hard boil and cook them in curries. We make them into omelettes, stuff them into rolls, or dunk them in gravy. We fry and serve them with cheese and chillies on toast in the newly-popular Eggs Kejriwal. We make bizarre variations (fried with Fanta!) that are condemned or celebrated on social media. What we don’t like is to just soft-boil them.

RBI may hold rate yet again to focus on inflation management, say experts
RBI may again keep the key interest rate unchanged in April as it is likely to focus more on bringing down inflation to the 4 per cent target after concerns over economic growth abated with GDP growth estimated at nearly 8 per cent, said experts. Also, the Reserve Bank's rate-setting panel — Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) — may take cues from the central banks of some major economies like the US and UK, which are apparently in wait-and-watch mode on interest rate cuts. Switzerland has become the first major economy to cut interest rates, while Japan, the world's third-largest economy, ended its eight-year period of negative interest rates regime. The meeting of the Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das headed MPC is scheduled for April 3-5. The decision will be announced on April 5 (Friday). It will be the first bi-monthly monetary policy of fiscal 2024-25. A total of six MPC meetings are scheduled for the fiscal beginning April 1, 2024.

Charting the global economy: US inflation cools; Japanese Yen stays weak
Federal Reserve cooled last month, and consumer spending rebounded sharply. Earlier in the week, the collapse of a major bridge in Baltimore will cause weeks or months of transportation disruptions in the Mid-Atlantic region and accelerate a shift of cargo to the US West Coast. In Japan, the yen weakened to levels last seen in 1990, prompting multiple officials to affirm their commitment to intervene if necessary.

Japan expands its foreign worker visa programme for the first time since inception
Japan's demand for foreign labor has increased due to factors such as its declining birthrate and shortages in transportation and logistics industries. These shortages are expected to worsen with the implementation of new regulations limiting overtime hours for drivers starting in April, referred to as the «2024 problem.» The government aims to admit up to 820,000 foreigners under the skilled worker visa program over the next five fiscal years, beginning in April. This number is more than double the previous estimate for the five years leading up to fiscal 2023, which ended in March.

Anxiety grips China as Japan strengthens defence capabilities & outreach
China whenever Japan, engages in military and security-related activities. On March 26, as Japan removed restrictions on transfer of defence technology in order to allow the worldwide export of advanced fighter jets that it is jointly developing with Italy and the UK, China expressed its concern on the development. “China noted relevant reports and expresses grave concern over the decision. Given Japan’s not-too-distant history of militarist aggression, Japan’s military and security moves are closely watched by its Asian neighbours and the international community,” China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said. The Japanese government-led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida approved revised export rules on transfer of defence equipment and technology after the ruling outfit, the Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, the Komeito Party agreed on these rules, according to a report in The Japan Times.
