Battle for 7-Eleven could be tipping point for Japanese M&A

TOKYO—The multibillion takeover battle for the Japanese owner of 7-Eleven is unfolding against a backdrop of heightened deal activity involving foreign bidders, fanned by a weak yen, undervaluation, and a profitability gap at many big Japanese firms compared with their international peers. Canada’s Alimentation Couche-Tard has made a $47 billion offer for Seven & i, triggering a promised refocus on profitability by Seven & i management.

Why South Korean and Japanese women are choosing American or European husbands
Data reveals a clear preference among these women for Western partners. In South Korea, 28% of international marriages in 2023 involved American men, followed by 18% with Chinese men. Marriages to men from other Western countries, including France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, accounted for approximately 17%. A similar trend appears in Japan, where American men were the top choice among foreign grooms for Japanese women. Japanese men seeking foreign brides, however, primarily choose women from China and the Philippines.

BOJ is holding cards close to its chest on December rate hike
Bank of Japan is staying guarded on the timing of the next rate hike with December hardly a done deal given soft consumption, its governor's cautious decision-making style and anxiety over U.S. economic policy in a second Trump presidency. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda signalled that December will be a live meeting in an interview with the Nikkei newspaper last week, when he said another rate hike was approaching.

Asian equities edge lower ahead of US jobs data
Asian equities tracked a drop in US shares ahead of jobs data that may help shape the direction of the Federal Reserve’s policy path later this month. Equities in Japan, Australia and futures in Hong Kong all fell, taking cues from the downbeat mood on Wall Street. The S&P 500 dropped 0.2% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 slipped 0.3%, their first declines in five sessions.

Rate cut bets boost stocks as Bitcoin stalks $100,000
Asian stocks were mixed on Thursday in the wake of record peaks on Wall Street as a softer read on U.S. services data boosted investor confidence in the Fed lowering interest rates. The S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow all notched record highs overnight and bitcoin, at times a barometer of the mood, was back within a whisker of $100,000.

Asian stocks rise on Powell's bullish comments
global stocks hit a record with Jerome Powell’s bullish comments that supported risk assets. Currency traders remained on alert as the French government fell after a no-confidence vote. Shares in Japan and Australia rose, while equity futures in Hong Kong were slightly lower. US equity futures were little changed after Wednesday advances for the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 nudged a gauge of global stocks to a new high.

Does Ohtani still owe manager Dave Roberts a new Porsche?
Shohei Ohtani, where is the fancy Porsche you hinted at giving your manager Dave Roberts if the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series? Well, the Dodgers won the World Series against the New York Yankees more than a month ago, so what gives? Visiting Tokyo on Wednesday and speaking to mostly Japanese reporters, Roberts was reminded that Ohtani gave teammate Joe Kelly a new Porsche when Kelly agreed to hand over his No 17 to the Japanese superstar after he joined the Dodgers from the Angels.

South Korea shocker: US treasuries, US$, Yen, gold and crypto will be rallying today: Ajay Bagga
Ajay Bagga, Market Expert, says he is expecting cryptos and gold to go up. There will be a flight to safety. Both the yen and the dollar will get bought into. In US treasuries, one can expect the yields to go down. Today we saw French yields reaching the Greece yield levels. We are seeing China borrowing at cheaper rates than Japan. We are expecting the Bank of Japan to come in and raise rates at its next meeting in the next fortnight. Following the political developments in South Korea and martial laws being put in place and then revoked, the Samsung stock is under heavy selling pressure. How do you expect global investors to react in the short term? Could this spark a broader risk aversion in emerging markets? Ajay Bagga: The Korean exchange has said they will function as normal. The party leader of the president has opposed this on a Facebook post and the defence minister has called for the military. So, we really do not know what is happening right now. It actually came out of the blue. There have been political wranglings on the budget and this is a minority government which would not survive a floor test. So, overall, it is a very big surprise and I am sure the allies of South Korea from Japan to Europe are working on the back channels to see how this situation can be diffused. It is not a dictatorial country. It is a very strong democracy standing up to its communist neighbours. So, it is very critical that democracy is protected.
