Kelvin Kiptum: Eternal marathon star
Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum, who died aged 24 in a car crash on Sunday, blazed to athletics stardom when he seized the marathon world record in Chicago last October. Born in the Rift Valley, the heartland of Kenyan distance running, Kiptum was barely a teen when he began following elite athletes training in the legendary high-altitude region. He burst onto the marathon scene in 2022 with a stunning debut in the 26.2-mile (42.195-km) distance in Valencia where he clocked 2:01:53.

Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum dies in road accident
marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach were killed in a traffic accident in the Rift Valley on Sunday, cutting short the promising career of the only man to have run the endurance classic in less than two hours and one minute. The 24-year-old set the world record at the Chicago Marathon in October with a time of two hours and 35 seconds to surpass the mark of 2:01:09 run by compatriot Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin in 2022. Kiptum, who clocked three of the seven fastest marathon times in history, had been hoping to become the first man to run the marathon in under two hours in race conditions at Rotterdam in April as well as make his Olympic debut in Paris in July.

How an invasive ant caused lions to change their diet
Research published Thursday has shown how an ant muscled into a Kenyan savannah and sparked such a dramatic transformation in the landscape that even the local lions changed the way they hunt. The study highlights the potentially profound impacts of invasive species, which are spreading at an increasing rate as human activities give animals, insects and plants opportunities to hitchhike into new territories. «Oftentimes, we find it's the little things that rule the world,» said Todd Palmer, an ecologist from the University of Florida, who was part of the research team that traced the implications of the big-headed ant on the hunting habits of lions in central Kenya.

Low export demand and sluggish rural consumption to dampen tea realisations for North India estates, says ICRA
ICRA expects the margin for tea estates based out of North India (NI) to be significantly impacted in FY2024 due to the double whammy of increase in cost of production, following the wage rate hikes in West Bengal and Assam and the drop in realisation due to the low export demand and a sluggish rural consumption. According to ICRA’s recent note on the sector, the operating profit margin (OPM) of NI-based bulk tea players is expected to be significantly impacted in FY2024 and, given the current operating environment in the tea industry, both domestic and international, any material improvement in profitability during FY2025 appears unlikely at present. The rating agency has thus revised the sector outlook to Negative from Stable. «The all-India auction prices of orthodox (ODX) tea in 10M CY2023 witnessed a significant decline of Rs.
