Why next three months are crucial for Indian football
Sunil Chhetri, India’s football captain, once told this paper. In that context, the next three months will be crucial for Indian football. India are scheduled to face Afghanistan (twice), Kuwait and Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the third qualifying round. If India could make it for the first time in history, the Blue Tigers will have the opportunity of playing five of Asia’s best teams twice within a one-year time frame. Ten games against quality teams could completely redefine the growth curve of Indian football. “Every football player wants to get as close to the World Cup as he possibly can. In our case this is our best opportunity. We have never made it to the third round and we know this will open up 10 more games for us and we can then play each game as a final,” India’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu said.

Oil’s endgame could be highly disruptive
oil markets have been largely quiescent. In fact, however, a new phase is beginning—one in which oil demand, not supply, will be the primary influence on energy markets. This shift will bring with it profound geopolitical consequences.

Kuwait, seven of the eight Indian navy veterans who were sentenced to death on 'espionage' charges, heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying they wouldn't have been freed had it for the sustained diplomatic efforts at his behest to secure their release. Their death sentence was later commuted to an extended prison term following sustained diplomatic interventions and legal assistance from New Delhi. Relieved to finally walk free, the seven former Navy officers raised chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' after arriving at the Delhi airport in the early hours of Monday.

AFC Asian Cup is the most important tournament for India: Sunil Chhetri
All eyes will yet again be on Sunil Chhetri as he leads India at the AFC Asian Cup on Saturday against Australia. First things first, it is a very tough group and India’s chances of making the next stage is limited. Having said that, a good fight against Australia and Uzbekistan and a win against Syria could lay the groundwork for the World Cup qualifiers against Afghanistan in March. Chhetri talks to ET about the importance of the Asian Cup, India’s chances in the World Cup qualifiers and more. Excerpts: How important is the AFC Asian Cup. Could you help put things in context? Except the five teams from Asia that go on to play the World Cup, every other Asian team looks at the Asian Cup as the World Cup.

US tries to downplay differences with India; seeks engagement to address Ukraine-Hamas conflicts
India over an alleged plot to kill Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and expressed its willingness to engage with New Delhi in resolving the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. “I would say that we would welcome India’s constructive engagement in these two matters (wars in Ukraine and Gaza) as we welcome constructive engagement from countries around the world,” US state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said. He said the Joe Biden administration has focused a “great deal of time and attention” on the ties with India. Miller’s comments came ahead of foreign minister S Jaishankar’s Moscow trip later this week. India, which has maintained neutrality in the Ukraine war and continued its engagements with Russia, favours dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward to end the conflict. India has strong ties with Israel as well as with the Arab world. The country recently hosted the Sultan of Oman.
