Reliance's Jio Platforms clears hurdle in bid to launch satellite internet in India
Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms and Luxembourg-based SES to provide gigabit fibre internet has won approval from the Indian space regulator to operate satellites there, a government executive said. The three approvals issued to Orbit Connect India — which aims to provide satellite-based high-speed internet access — come as companies from Amazon.com to Elon Musk's Starlink have been vying for the go-ahead to launch satellite communication services in the world's most populous nation. The authorisations have not been previously reported. They were granted in April and June from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, known as IN-SPACe. These allow Orbit Connect to operate satellites above India, but further approvals are needed by the country's department of telecoms to begin operations.

Suez like Canal in Europe? What is new construction about and which countries will it connect to?
Suez Canal whose construction began in 1859 witnessed the overall economic development of prosperity of the region and large parts of the world. It provided an opportunity to connect Europe and Asia or the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It cut short the distance between Europe and Asia which otherwise had to follow a circular path around the Cape of Good Hope. It is in this regard that Europe is constructing its network of canals.

Merger talks between NSE, BSE offshore arms called off
MUMBAI:In a significant setback to Gift City's ambitions of becoming a global financial hub, the much-anticipated merger between the two international exchanges located there, NSE IX and India INX, has been called off, according to two persons aware of the development.India INX is a subsidiary of BSE Ltd, while NSE IX is led by the National Stock Exchange Ltd.The merger was expected to enhance trading volumes and attract international investors to Gujarat's Gift City, where the average daily turnover on international exchanges runs into billions of dollars. The talks were called off by the BSE because discussions, on since 2022, had failed to make any headway, said one of the persons cited above.A BSE spokesperson confirmed that the merger talks are "off the table" but declined to comment on the reasons for the decision. Attempts to reach a spokesperson of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) were unsuccessful."The merger was driven by the IFSCA's objective of making Gift City a global financial centre rivalling the likes of Singapore, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, and Dubai.

Beyond Tesla, what is Elon Musk's next big India ambition?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk comes to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be the car maker's entry into India. There is another matter that has been pending for some time for lack of adequate disclosures. Musk's India ambition spans from road to space. He has thrown his hat in the ring for the satellite communication, or satcom, a futuristic technology that promises to revolutionise India's telecom sector. Musk, with his satcom company Starlink, will compete with Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal whose respective companies, Reliance Jio JV with Luxembourg-based SES; and Bharti AIrtel jointly with OneWeb-Eutelsat, are also in the race for satcom spectrum. Another giant, Amazon, is also in the reckoning. The satcom sector is witnessing intense rivalry even before the start of services. Airtel and Jio stand sharply divided on various issues related to satcom and have battled each other over complexities that surround satcom. The rivalry between the two biggies, with other satcom players also divided sharply, continues. A few days ago, they locked horns over the usage and price of satcom. The main issue, whether satcom spectrum should be allocated administratively or auctioned, has been settled with the new Telecommunication Act, 2023, giving legislative backing to allocation of satellite spectrum via the administrative or the ‘non-auction route’. At present, the DoT is finalising the modalities.

EU court takes Russian billionaires Fridman, Aven off sanctions list
European Union Court of Justice ruled on Wednesday to remove Russian billionaires Mikhail Fridman and Petr Aven from a list of individuals facing European Union sanctions after Russia's attack on Ukraine in 2022. «The General Court considers that none of the reasons set out in the initial acts is sufficiently substantiated and that the inclusion of Mr Aven and Mr Fridman on the lists at issue was therefore not justified,» the Luxembourg-based court said in a statement.

UN human rights body calls for halt to weapons shipments to Israel as concerns about Gaza war mount
Israel in a resolution passed Friday that aims to help prevent rights violations against Palestinians amid Israel's blistering military campaign in Gaza. The 47-member-country Human Rights Council voted 28-6 in favor of the resolution, with 13 abstentions. The sweeping measure takes aim at an array of Israeli actions such as impeding access to water and limiting shipments of humanitarian aid into Palestinian areas. It also calls on U.N.-backed independent investigators to report on shipments of weapons, munitions and «dual use» items — that have both civilian and military applications — that could be used by Israel against Palestinians.

Airtel versus Jio: More shots fired in the satcom space battle
Airtel and Reliance Jio, found themselves on a new battlefront — the satellite communication or satcom, a futuristic technology that promises to revolutionise India's telecom sector. Companies such as Reliance Jio’s JV with Luxembourg-based SES; Starlink; Amazon; Bharti-backed OneWeb; and the Tata-Telesat combine are working on creating a constellation of satellites to deliver ‘broadband-from-space’ services in India. India's current telecom market has just two big players, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, but satcom will attract more big players. Since satcom does not require installation of towers on earth, the entry barrier is not as formidable as it is in traditional terrestrial mobile telecom.
