Death toll rises to 30 in northern China floods
Beijing, officials said Saturday, bringing the death toll from recent torrential rains in northern China to at least 30. Officials reported the deaths in Baoding, about 150 kilometres (90 miles) from Beijing, adding that 18 people were missing. Storm Doksuri, a former super typhoon that hit mainland China last Friday, has brought the most severe rains to the region since records began 140 years ago. By noon Saturday (0400 GMT), more than 600,000 of Baoding's 11.5 million residents had been evacuated from areas deemed to be at risk, officials said. The torrential rain that hit northeast China on Saturday battered the provinces bordering Russia and North Korea.

In layman's terms, the team allegedly created a material allowing electrical currents to flow without resistance or energy loss. Previously, such types of materials were only thought to have functioned at absolute zero temperatures.

Mobile restriction in, er, restricted China
China, which sort of leads the pack, is one of the Biggest Brothers. (To know about North Korea, one has to take a peek in, which is tough.) After curbing citizens' access to several internet platforms that people in other countries take for granted, the nanny state HQed in Beijing is apparently proposing new measures to curb the amount of time kids can spend on their phones.

25th World Scout Jamboree’s participants in Buan hit by heat exhaustion, 400 cases reported on night 1
World Scout Jamboree in Buan, South Korea has been marred by the scorching heat, with hundreds of participants suffering from heat exhaustion. On the first night of the event, about 400 cases were reported, and many were treated at a makeshift hospital at the campsite. The temperatures in North Jeolla province, where the jamboree is taking place, have soared to 35°C (95°F) amid a heatwave warning. Scouts from countries like the US, Bangladesh, and the UK have been affected, with the UK contingent being the largest with around 4,500 participants out of the total 43,000 in attendance. The UK Foreign Office stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and have consular officials on-site to support the attendees. They are in regular contact with Scouts UK and the relevant Korean authorities to ensure the safety of British nationals. A fire service official revealed that most of the scouts who required medical attention had mild symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and nausea, and they have mostly returned to their campsites.

Shipping companies are on a spending spree
shipping companies are plowing their pandemic windfalls into orders for new vessels on an unprecedented scale, making an industry known for hair-raising cycles of boom and bust more vulnerable in the latest downturn. Container carriers like MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co., A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, CMA CGM SA and Hapag-Lloyd AG — all backed by European billionaires — are spending record profits gleaned during the health crisis to splash out on new models mostly from Korean and Chinese shipyards. This has pushed the global order pipeline to a historic level — almost $90 billion by one estimate. But the tide has turned in the notoriously cyclical sector as freight rates flirt with below-breakeven levels and fears about overcapacity re-emerge. “Too many large container ships have been ordered,” said Erik I. Lassen, chief executive officer of Danish Ship Finance A/S, a company providing vessel financing. He noted that deliveries are now starting at a time when supply chains are running more smoothly and demand for freight transport is back to pre-pandemic levels. “There will be shipowners — tonnage providers — out there that will have stretched themselves,” he said in an interview. “Although the last couple of years have been profitable for shipping, the accumulated earnings are far from enough to fund the investment in new technology and ships in the coming decade.”
