Why India will face political and trade hurdles as long as Iran’s Islamic regime remains in power
Iran. New Delhi may see the attack as an opportunity to improve ties with Tehran and open a second front against Pakistan. That would be a mistake. India needs only to consider the aftermath of the October 7 terrorist attacks by Tehran-backed Hamas in Israel to realise this. That assault has led to a growing chain of military conflicts that negatively affect India's vital national interests in trade, energy and transport. Here's how Iran's actions and policies are undermining India's interests:

India’s basket of crude price not likely to decline in FY25
NEW DELHI : The price of the Indian basket of crude oil is unlikely to reflect cheap Russian oil prices in the next financial year despite making up a significant chunk of India’s oil imports. The Indian basket of crude oil represents a derived basket comprising of sour grade (Oman & Dubai average) and sweet grade (Brent dated) of crude oil processed in Indian refineries in a ratio of 75.62 : 24.38. Two people aware of the developments said that irrespective of the quantity of Russian oil imports the crude basket price may not include their price as there is no benchmark price of the Russian crude variants.

QatarEnergy pauses LNG shipments through Red Sea, seeking security advice
QatarEnergy, one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas, has stopped sending tankers via the Red Sea although production continues, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Monday. At least four tankers used to carry Qatari LNG were held up over the weekend after U.S. and British forces carried out air and sea strikes on Yemen in response to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea, part of a route that accounts for about 15% of the world's shipping traffic.

Gold rises on geopolitical tensions but investment demand remains weak
Gold, reeling under hotter than expected December US CPI inflation data released on Thursday, caught a bid Friday as the US and the UK launched airstrikes on Iran-backed Houthis' targets in Yemen to stop shipping attacks in the Red Sea. In a reaction, the Yemeni Group vowed to retaliate with an urgent response in the form of a move that intends to target all US and UK interests alongside those linked to Israel. The strike by the US and UK, which included more than 70 airstrikes on Yemen targets, risks spreading fallout from Israel-Hamas war, which, in the worst-case scenario, can drag in other regional powers more directly. It is to be noted that earlier in the week, Houthis launched their biggest shipping attacks and Iran seized an oil tanker off the Coast of Oman. The US government has not ruled out more strikes on the Houthis targets.

Mint takes a closer look at the situation. For close to two months, attacks on ships on the vital Red Sea routes have troubled the international community. The Houthis, a rebel group in northern Yemen, have launched these attacks in an effort to punish Israel, a key link along the trade route, for its military offensive in Gaza.

Indians can now visit 62 countries visa-free; Check the full list to know more
Henley Passport Index, released on Tuesday, India's passport has ascended to the 80th position worldwide. This elevated ranking now affords Indian citizens the privilege of unhindered exploration across 62 countries, alleviating the burden of intricate visa application procedures. The assessment of this ranking aligns with visa regulations effective as of January 11, as sourced from data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). A cornerstone in displaying, organizing, and ranking global passports, the Henley Passport Index, reveals six countries — France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain — jointly holding the prestigious title of the world's most potent visa. Citizens from these nations enjoy the unprecedented freedom to traverse over 194 countries without dealing with pesky visa requirements. On the flip side, Afghanistan sits at the bottom rung of the list, granting its passport holders access to a mere 28 countries without a visa. Syria closely follows with visa-free entry to 29 destinations, trailed by Iraq with 31, and Pakistan with 34. Indian passport bearers can now revel in the liberty of visiting 62 countries, including Oman and Qatar, without the encumbrance of a visa. These destinations extend either visa-free entry or the convenience of visa-on-arrival for Indian travelers, as elucidated by the Henley Passport Index 2024. Here is the full list of destinations Indians can visit without getting a visa before travel:
