Diamond cos tread on rule minefield; face compliance burden under new sanctions regime
diamond houses in India were alerted over the weekend that missing paper trails and sloppy records would land them in trouble under the new sanctions regime that began on March 1 to block Russian gems from the affluent western markets. The discreet, quaint world of diamonds, where close-knit jewellers and diamantaires cut deals in old-fashioned ways, is scanning a new, unfamiliar compliance mechanism that could change the way they have been doing business for ages. If local firms, which cut and polish eight out of 10 diamonds mined in the world, fail to generate and safekeep documentary evidence that the rough stones and jewellery did not originate in Russia, they could come under serious scrutiny. Cautioning them about the pitfalls, the apex trade body has circulated the various guidelines and formats of self-declarations that diamond firms shipping to the US and EU must share with their buyers to avoid trouble.

Gemini, a case of twin bias, anti-bias
Google's generative AI product Gemini has drawn angry responses of inbuilt bias, which may not be the case. The problem with inaccurate rendition of historical faces — including a 'less controversial' image of a Black Elon Musk (pic) — could be more a function of undue haste in bringing Gemini to market than any desire to subvert history that conspiracy theorists are alleging. Technology products undergo continuous refinement over their life cycle, most of which occurs after they have been released commercially.

Germany and Poland say they're not sending troops to Ukraine as the Kremlin warns of a wider war
Germany and Poland affirmed Tuesday that they would not be sending troops to Ukraine, after reports that some Western countries may be considering doing so as the war with Russia enters its third year. The head of NATO also said the U.S.-led military alliance has no plans to send troops to Ukraine, after other central European leaders confirmed that they too would not be providing soldiers. The Kremlin, meanwhile, warned that a direct conflict between NATO and Russia would be inevitable if the alliance sends combat troops. «In this case, we need to talk not about probability, but about the inevitability (of conflict),» Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

attacks on Indian students in America have risen in the recent past and the UK's economy is still struggling to recover from the mild recession it was reeling under — it is perhaps the time for Indian students to reassess the conventional study destinations of America, UK and Canada.
