Share of Russian oil in India's imports rises to 35% in FY24
Russia captured a larger share of India's crude imports in the just-ended fiscal year despite narrowing discounts on its oil and sanctions imposed by G7 nations due its invasion of Ukraine. The share of Russian oil in India's total imports rose to 35% in 2023-24 from 23% in the previous year, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. During the year, all other key suppliers, including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the US lost share in the Indian market. Iraq's share fell to 20% (from 21%). Similar drops were noted for Saudi Arabia (15% from 17.5%), UAE (6% from 9%), and the US (3.5% from 5.5%). Russia supplied 1.57 million barrels a day (mb/d) in FY24, up from 1mb/d in the previous year. Iraq's supply of 0.89 mb/d in 2023-24 was lower than 0.95 mb/d in the previous year. Saudi's supply fell to 0.69 mb/d from 0.78 mb/d.

ESG reporting witnesses increase in global variance
US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) last week stayed the first-of-its-kind climate disclosure rules pending judicial review and amid a political backlash. The rules, adopted a month earlier, had taken two years to pass a pared down version and required public companies to disclose extensive climate change-related information in their regulatory filings. This development comes three months after China unveiled its ESG rules requiring companies to publish sustainability reports by 2026. In a significant move, the Supreme Court of India in a ruling released last week expanded the scope of Articles 14 and 21 to include the 'right against the adverse effects of climate change'.

Rupee vs Dollar: INR to remain range bound in near term, offer hedging opportunities to importers, exporters
foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) would have an impact on the movement of rupee against the US dollar bringing it to the downside on occasion. While the USD-INR pair is expected to remain in a range between 82 and 84 for FY 2025, in the near term 83.50 looks like a strong resistance for the pair while 82.50 acts as a strong support. These aforementioned support and resistance levels will remain sacrosanct for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Central Bank will likely keep the pair within this range to ensure all-round stability.

Oil at $100? Will oil prices hit a century this summer as a global shortage takes hold?
oil jumped above $90 a barrel just days ago, military tensions between Israel and Iran were the immediate trigger. But the rally’s foundations went deeper — to global supply shocks that are intensifying fears of a commodity-driven inflation resurgence. A recent move by Mexico to slash its crude exports is compounding a global squeeze, prompting refiners in the US — the world’s biggest oil producer — to consume more domestic barrels. American sanctions have stranded Russian cargoes at sea, with Venezuelan supply a potential next target. Houthi rebel attacks on tankers in the Red Sea have delayed crude shipments. And despite the turmoil, OPEC and its allies are sticking with their production cuts. It all adds up to a magnitude of supply disruption that has taken traders by surprise. The crunch is turbocharging an oil rally ahead of the US summer driving season, threatening to push Brent crude, the global benchmark, to $100 for the first time in almost two years. That’s amplifying the inflation concerns that are clouding US President Joe Biden’s reelection chances and complicating central banks’ rate-cut deliberations.

It was not immediately clear what weapon was used in the strike on Sunday. Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Time, what to eat, and tips for pregnant women during Surya Grahan
total Solar Eclipse is scheduled to take place on April 8, 2024. This rare astronomical event occurs when the moon moves between the Earth and the sun, causing a shadow to fall on certain parts of our planet. During such occurrences, there are various cultural beliefs and customs surrounding eclipses, including dietary practices during Surya Grahan. Although this upcoming Solar Eclipse won't be visible in India, it will be observable in countries like Canada, the US, UK, Russia, Norway, Ireland, Greenland, Spain, and nearby regions. According to Indian Standard Time (IST), the Solar Eclipse is expected to begin at 9:12 pm on April 8, 2024, and end at 2:22 am on April 9, 2024. In Indian traditions, it is advised to be cautious during Surya Grahan, especially for pregnant women, as this period is believed to be potentially harmful for them. Fasting during solar eclipses is a common practice across many cultures, seen as a way to purify oneself spiritually. Fasting is believed to cleanse the body and mind, allowing individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, and introspection during this sacred time. Those who choose to fast may opt for simple, easily digestible foods such as fruits and nuts or consume only water.

Sudip Bandyopadhyay on sectors that will do well in Q4 and sectors that will not
Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Group Chairman, Inditrade Capital, says: “The way I look at it, infra will come back with a strong set of numbers and so will defence. Apart from that, I am looking at a good set of numbers from BFSI as well as real estate. These are the four-five sectors which definitely will come back with good numbers. As far as other sectors are concerned, IT and FMCG will be a mixed bag. I do not think we will see a major pickup in earnings in IT. Cement, again, will be a little subdued.” What are you making of the resilience of India equity markets? The fact that crude is already at $91, but the Indian markets are not really absorbing that hit so far and even the central bank seems not perturbed by the sudden spike that one has seen. Sudip Bandyopadhyay: Crude at $91 does not augur well for India. However, this has just happened and crude prices have been benign for a very long time and this sudden shooting up is predominantly on the back of two things. One is what is happening in Russia and the Gulf and also the Chinese demand suddenly picking up with possible economic recovery in China. Now, the combined effect of all these factors and somewhere I am sure the calculations are that geopolitical tensions will ease and production in Russia as well as the Gulf will stabilise.

US, China to discuss manufacturing ‘overcapacity' issue, economic growth
US lauds India's policy of ‘forcing’ Russia to sell oil at bigger discounts "Agreed that the US and China will hold intensive exchanges on balanced growth in the domestic and global economies. These exchanges will facilitate a discussion around macroeconomic imbalances, including their connection to overcapacity, and I intend to use this opportunity to advocate for a level playing field for American workers and firms," Yellen said. On Friday, Yellen chided China for “unfair" treatment of American and other foreign companies.
