Russian military takes Ukrainian town in advance on Pokrovsk
Pokrovsk and seek to pierce the Ukrainian defensive front lines. Russian forces, which control about a fifth of Ukraine since invading in February 2022, are advancing in eastern Ukraine in an attempt to take the whole of the Donbas. Russia's defence ministry said its forces had taken the town of Novohrodivka, which lies 12 km from Pokrovsk, an important rail and road hub for Ukrainian forces in the area. The town had a population of 14,000 before the war. Yuri Podolyaka, an influential Ukrainian-born, pro-Russian military blogger, published maps showing Russian forces attacking beyond Novohrodivka in at least two places less than 7 km (4 miles) from Pokrovsk.

After 11 months of conflict in Gaza, CIA Director William Burns said he was working very hard on «texts and creative formulas» with mediators Qatar and Egypt to secure a ceasefire, by finding a proposal which satisfies both parties. «We will make this more detailed proposal, I hope in the next several days, and then we'll see,» said Burns, speaking at a Financial Times event in London alongside Richard Moore, head of Britain's MI6 foreign spy agency, in an unprecedented joint public appearance.

Ukraine's foreign ministry said on Saturday it was deeply concerned by reports about a possible impending transfer of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia. In a statement emailed to reporters, the ministry said the deepening military co-operation between Tehran and Moscow was a threat to Ukraine, Europe and the Middle East, and called on the international community to increase pressure on Iran and Russia. CNN and the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Iran had transferred short-range ballistic missiles to Russia, citing unidentified sources.

US, UK spy chiefs praise Ukraine's 'audacious' Russia incursion; call for Gaza cease-fire
intelligence agencies said Saturday that Ukraine's surprise incursion into Russia is a significant achievement that could change the narrative of the grinding 2 1/2-year war. Richard Moore, the head of MI6, said Kyiv's surprise move in August to seize territory in Russia's Kursk region was «typically audacious and bold on the part of the Ukrainians, to try and change the game». He said the offensive had «brought the war home to ordinary Russians». Speaking alongside Moore at a rare public event in London, CIA Director William Burns said the offensive was a «significant achievement» that had exposed vulnerabilities in the Russian military. Burns also warned of the growing and «troubling» defence relationship between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea that he said threatens both Ukraine and Western allies in the Middle East. North Korea has sent ammunition and missiles to Russia to use against Ukraine, while Iran supplies Moscow with attack drones.

Ukraine destroys scores of Russian drones as it continues to face new wave of long-range attacks
Ukraine Saturday as the country continues to face increased long-range bombardment from invading Russian forces. The Ukrainian Air Force said that 67 drones were launched over the country overnight, with air defences active in 11 regions across the country, including in the capital, Kyiv. Fifty-eight drones were shot down, with three more destroyed by electronic weapons systems, it said. Debris from one drone was photographed on the street outside Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. Ukraine's parliamentary press service confirmed that drone fragments had been found but said there were no casualties and no damage to the parliament building. The bombardment follows a week of increased long-range attacks across Ukraine, including a missile strike on a Ukrainian military academy and hospital Tuesday in the city of Poltava that killed 55 people and wounded 328 more.

Is Putin still on Team Trump? The answer isn't as clear cut anymore
Putin was Team Trump. Top Kremlin officials cracked open champagne bottles in the early hours of Nov. 9 as the businessman-turned-politician emerged as the surprise victor in the US election. When it comes to determining where the Russian leader stands today, there is no easy answer. US intelligence seems certain he wants Donald Trump back in the White House. Putin, meanwhile is reveling in making cryptic comments that often double as needling observations: such as when he praised Joe Biden for his age and experience, or now Kamala Harris for her “infectious” laughter. The view that has crystallized in Moscow, according to five people familiar with the latest thinking in the Kremlin, is that there really isn’t much reason to raise a glass this time around if Trump returns.

YouTube terminating Tenet Media channel after US indictment
YouTube said on Thursday it was terminating the Tenet Media channel and four channels operated by Tenet owner Lauren Chen, following an indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Justice Department on Wednesday filed money-laundering charges against two employees of Russian state media network RT for what officials said was a scheme to hire an American company to produce online content to influence the 2024 presidential election. Justice Department officials said the two employees used shell companies and fake personas to pay $10 million to an unnamed Tennessee company to produce online videos aimed at amplifying political divisions in the United States.

Was Hvaldimir the “spy whale" shot dead? Animal rights groups demand investigation
Animal rights groups claimed that "Hvaldimir," a beluga whale well-known for its alleged connections to the Russian military, had been shot to death. The whale made headlines across the world in 2019 when it was spotted off the coast of Norway. It was wearing a harness made of metal, which led to speculation that Russia had been training it to be a spy. Animal rights organizations NOAH and One Whale claimed that gunshot was the cause of the whale's demise and pushed Norwegian police to launch a criminal inquiry into the event, as per the reports of The Moscow Times. Hvaldimir's body was discovered on Saturday in a bay on the southwest coast of Norway. Following that, his remains were transferred to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute for an autopsy; the results are expected to be available in three weeks. After seeing the whale's corpse, Regina Crosby Haug, the leader of One Whale, verified that it had sustained many gunshot wounds. Hvaldimir's bloodied body was depicted in photos that One Whale and NOAH published, and they clearly indicated bullet holes. The director of NOAH, Siri Martinsen, stressed the gravity of the injuries and voiced concern about the possibility of criminal conduct. At present, the police are assessing the amount of evidence to see if a formal inquiry should be launched.
