From Baroque Classic to Rock Adaptation: The Resurgence of Pachelbel's Canon in D
music producer in 2002 as ‘almost the godfather of pop’, Johann Pachelbel was the veritable SD Burman of late 17th century Europe. His Canon in D, (over)familiar to many of us from far too many wedding scenes in romcoms, is a piece that gathers layers, lifting itself as it glides along. The music is startlingly simple, three violins pressing out 28 varieties of the same melody over the bass line. Pachelbel’s cyclical tune unfolds like delicate sonic origami. The forth-and-back is calming, rousing, as if the world has turned to music.

The forth-and-back is calming, rousing, as if the world has turned to music. Pachelbel's most famous tune was immensely popular during his time. It then fell into obscurity… until an arrangement recorded by French conductor Jean-Francois Paillard in 1968 got 20th century ears pricked up. France-based Greek band Aphrodite's Child made a rock adaptation of the baroque classic, 'Rain and Tears', the same year, which reached No. 1 in various European countries.

Apple will revamp Siri to catch up to its chatbot competitors
Apple's top software executives decided early last year that Siri, the company's virtual assistant, needed a brain transplant. The decision came after executives Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea spent weeks testing OpenAI's new chatbot, ChatGPT. The product's use of generative artificial intelligence, which can write poetry, create computer code and answer complex questions, made Siri look antiquated, said two people familiar with the company's work, who didn't have permission to speak publicly.

Morning Coffee: Former Goldman Sachs ED recalls psychological obstacles to quitting. The Morgan Stanley banker who thinks cufflinks slow him down
There are many things which keep people in the investment banking industry. Money, forexample. Also, the prospect of more money, and the threat of losing deferred money. There’s also interesting work and pleasant colleagues, for some lucky bankers. But, as former Goldman Sachs banker Cassindy Chao is refreshingly honest to admit, another thing that keeps people in the industry when they might otherwise be tempted to get out is the sheer psychological trauma of seeing friends and acquaintances get much richer than you. This is especially so when those people were formerly your juniors.

Google defends app store, fighting Epic Games' bid for major reforms
Google has asked a U.S. judge not to impose sweeping changes to the Alphabet unit's app store Play that were proposed by «Fortnite» maker Epic Games in the companies' closely-watched antitrust fight. Google made its filing late on Thursday in San Francisco federal court, where Epic last year persuaded a jury that the tech giant unlawfully stifled competition with its controls over apps downloads on Android devices and payments to developers for in-app transactions.
