Ghana pilots blockchain-based credentials and CBDC for global trade
The PoC was part of Project Desft (Digital Economy Semi-Fungible Token), an exploration from the BoG and Monetary Authority of Singapore into how technology can boost the participation of micro, small, and medium enterprises from developing countries in international trade. Maxwell Opoku-Afari, first deputy governor, Bank of Ghana, says: "Project Desft is aimed at supporting SMEs in Africa to engage in international trade by removing significant obstacles they face, such as establishing trust with overseas trade partners and obtaining support in cross-border payments and supply chain finance." The project has been focusing on cross-border trade between the two nations using the UN-developed, blockchain-based Universal Trusted Credential, the Singaporean Dollar stablecoin, the Ghanaian CBDC (eCedi) and purpose-bound money. Giesecke+Devrient delivered its Filia platform for the CBDC part, while local commercial lender Fidelity Bank offered banking and exchange services for the eCedi. G+D says the PoC demonstrated a direct transfer between the transacting parties, eliminating the need for the long chain of intermediaries and corresponding high costs in cross-border payments.

Posing as ‘Alicia,’ this man scammed hundreds online. He was also a victim.
MAE SOT, Thailand—In late December, Guracha Belachew Bersha helped lead a small but brazen rebellion. He’d been enslaved for 16 months in a twisted new criminal empire in which Chinese gangsters traffic people from around the world, often to remote and lawless parts of Southeast Asia, and force them to sit at computers all day scamming strangers online. The cyber frauds they’re forced to commit are called pig butchering, named for the way the perpetrators fatten up their victims by gaining their trust before taking their money and cutting them loose.

Higher capital gains tax: Who benefits the most?
capital gains tax rates is a welcome and logical change by the government. Under the new tax rules, stock investing will now attract a 12.5% Long-term capital gains tax (previously 10%) and 20% Short-term capital gains tax (previously 15%). Excluding tax havens such as Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE, India’s capital gains tax remains one of the lowest globally, especially as the amount of capital gains increases. And as Finance Secretary Somnath explains, analysis of the tax base shows that capital gains tax doesn’t really impact the middle class. 88% of the capital gains income is earned by individuals with an income above Rs. 15 Lakh and 62% by those with an income greater than Rs 1 crore. The investing community in India is a minority demographic that benefits from a tax rate much lower than the marginal rate, a standard tax rate for income earned by salaried and other business incomes. Even with the new rates, we’re still much below the marginal tax rate.
